If you visited L.A.'s heavily Latino East Side and checked out the music scene thoroughly, you would find a wide variety of styles: everything from rock, R&B, and hip-hop to Mexican forms like ranchero, mariachi, norteño, and tejano. Some of East L.A.'s rockers are part of the rock en español movement, which has found artists from all over Latin America (as well as parts of the U.S.) embracing different types of rock (metal, alternative, power pop, ska-punk -- you name it) but singing in Spanish exclusively. Other rockers from East L.A. prefer to sing in English exclusively or take the type of bilingual approach that Union 13 favors on its third album, Youth, Betrayal, and the Awakening. Whether Union 13's lead singer Edward Escoto is singing in English or Spanish, this CD is pure punk; fast, forceful, passionate, and angry. But Youth, Betrayal, and the Awakening isn't an exercise in anger for the sake of anger. Taking a look at some of the social and political issues facing East L.A. and similar communities, Union 13 reflects on the impact that they are having on Latino youth. You will hear a lot of anger on tracks like "Illusion," "Buscando la Verdad" (in Spanish, that means "searching for the truth"), and "Beyond the System," but it is anger combined with intelligence. Although it falls short of being a gem, Youth, Betrayal, and the Awakening is a decent offering from some Latino rockers who have a lot on their minds. ~ Alex Henderson

| | Putumayo Presents: African Groove CD (2003)
Youth, Betrayal And The Awakening
$10.69 This is a collection of African techno-informed tracks bearing the fruits of both ends of the tradition spectrum. Traditional percussion and string elements thrive among a thick layer of multi-formed electronica. The album opens with breakout artist Issa Bagayogo and his blend of Malian ngoni playing with electronic beats. The Coulibaly family mixes some fine balofon playing with a deep bass kick and some house beats, and Madeka provides a piece of pseudo-Kidjo with the help of a collection of other artists. Julien Jacob mixes some straightforward acoustic guitar with electronic bits while singing in a completely invented and non-translatable language without assigned meaning. The Zimbabwean group Peace of Ebony shows off a bit of slick rapping and Afro-pop influenced heavily by the Paris scene, and Hardstone reuses a Keith Sweat track as a base for some capable rapping. Positive Black Soul continues the African rap aesthetic, now with an influence of the Dakar studio scene, and Dady Mimbo pumps out something between Euro-dance and dub. The decidedly non-African Thievery Corporation shows ...

| | Frog Eyes Folded Palm CD (2004)
Youth, Betrayal And The Awakening
$12.25 A poetry slam for the criminally insane, Frog Eyes' Folded Palm is as unsettling as it is riveting. The Canadian quartet has succeeded in creating a sound so volatile that the very act of listening to it is exhausting. Carey Mercer projectile vomits lyrics like "Oh I will scorn the dark opinions of British children" like vintage Lux Interior, blending cuss-filled rants about "fu*king the son" with ruminations on everything from the human heart to matrimony-seeking sea captains like a Shakespearian lackey in a postapocalyptic Globe Theatre. What's ...
| | Dexter Gordon Gettin' Around CD (1965) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Youth, Betrayal And The Awakening
$8.69 After two Blue Note LPs recorded in Europe (his adopted home since 1962), Gordon finally made it back to the States to record this mid-Sixties release. Curiously, the two previously unreleased tunes seem slightly out of place with the rest of the record, and feel more akin to the kind of work Gordon's labelmates were releasing at the time. "Flick of a Trick" is a sultry, walking eight-bar blues, while "Very Saxily Yours," distinguishes itself from the standards here by virtue of its riffing melody and use of hits during the head.
Having said that, part of the appeal of Gordon's approach is the way this album is built from standards. There's a sense of getting down to basics, from the passion ...
