(3 Customer Reviews)
This two-disc set consists of BBC sessions from 1969 and 1970, when Yes was still in its creative infancy. That's not to say the band's sound was undeveloped or unfocused, just that they had yet to metamorphose into the prog giants they were destined to be. With original guitarist Peter Banks plying a somewhat more traditional rock sound, and keyboardist Tony Kaye eschewing the carnival-like flights of his successors, the original Yes was a much more grounded band. Their covers of songs by Richie Havens and Buffalo Springfield emphasize the folk-rock element that played a part in their early sound.
Most of the tunes on BEYOND AND BEFORE appeared on the first two Yes albums, but these live-in-the-studio versions have more rawness, with Banks, Kaye, and bassist Chris Squire frequently kicking the group dynamic into overdrive. Of special interest to hardcore Yes fans are the previously unrecorded cuts, include a version of the showtune "Something's Coming" and an original song, "For Everyone." BEYOND AND BEFORE presents a band that's embryonic but hardly unsophisticated.
Recorded live at the BBC, England in 1969 & 1970. Includes liner notes by Peter Banks.
Digitally remastered by Colin James & Peter Banks.
Yes: Jon Anderson (vocals); Peter Banks (guitar); Tony Kaye (organ); Chris Squire (bass); Bill Bruford (drums).

'For Everyone' hints, in a Starship Trooper sort of way, at what was to come. Only let down is the often weedy sound quality. Submitted by a reviewer (Amsterdam, Netherlands) Was This Review Helpful? you meen this ISNT a bootleg? wow! well it is good. but not good sound quality. Submitted by johncaudy (wilmette il.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Great Performances But Rough Sound Quality After hearing many other bands' BBC recordings, one must wonder where exactly the BBC folks kept these tapes. From the sound of these I can only guess that the Yes tapes were stored in a brown paper bag filled with nails. If you really love Yes, however, this is worth having simply for the fact that not very many recordings exist of this first Yes line up of Anderson, Squire, Banks, Kaye and Bruford. $6.39 When Jon Anderson rejoined Yes after DRAMA, he was inserting himself into an unusual situation. Keyboardist Geoff Downes and longtime guitarist Steve Howe had left to form Asia with prog rock vets John Wetton (King Crimson, Roxy Music etc.) and Carl Palmer (ELP). Chris Squire and Alan White brought original Yes keysman Tony Kaye back and recruited vibrant young Australian guitarist/vocalist/composer Trevor Rabin. The quartet had already begun writing and recording, but Anderson was able to insert himself into the proceedings with such ease that the new combination sounds completely natural on 90125.

$6.35 Though Yes's name quickly became synonymous with '70s prog rock, their 1969 debut is a far cry from the epic vistas they would later explore. Like many '60s bands, they covered the Byrds (the metaphysical "I See You") and the Beatles ("Every Little Thing"). Inspired by the likes of Vanilla Fudge and Rotary Connection, they turned these songs inside out, radically changing the tempos and creating their own elaborate arrangements. The end results often bore little similarity to the songs' original versions.

Beyond & Before: The BBC Recordings 1969-1970 songs
$6.55 Yes' second (and least successful) album was a transitional effort; the group trying for a more produced and sophisticated sound through the use of an orchestra. Even so, the results weren't conventional, because the group didn't tone down or turn down its sound. Much of Time and a Word relies on bold, highly animated performances by Bill Bruford, Chris Squire, and Tony Kaye. Additionally, by this time the group was developing a much tauter ensemble than was evident on their first LP, so there's no lack of visceral excitement. "No Opportunity Necessary, No Experience ...

Beyond & Before: The BBC Recordings 1969-1970 music CDs
$24.89 MODERN TIMES was the second Jefferson Starship forged under the creative auspices of Mickey Thomas and also reintroduced Grace Slick to the band. The combination spawned the rock hit "Find Your Way Back" and radical "Stairway to Cleveland."
This second edition of the Mickey Thomas-era Jefferson Starship/Starship polished '80s rock is actually a weird hybrid which you could call psychedelic metal. For fans of the fragments that were Sunfighter, Baron von Tollbooth & The Chrome Nun, Manhole, and other experimental Airplane offshoots, this material is much too mainstream for its own good. But it isn't the eminently dislikable Mickey Thomas who is the major culprit as much as it is producer/engineer Ron Nevison, whose homogenization of records from Ozzy Osborne to Heart displayed a glaring lack of creativity, inspiration, or sense of anything remotely resembling art. Yes, Marty Balin actually practiced "Jane" with the group prior to his leaving the Freedom at Point Zero sessions, and had he stayed onboard, the approach may have been a more progressive folk-rock. It was Larry Cox who engineered from Dragon Fly to Spitfire, co-producing the music with the very capable band. Minus Balin and Cox, the true evolution of the Airplane sound is mutated and muffled on Modern Times. Critic William Ruhlmann noted that "Stairway to Cleveland" is "as gutsy a statement of purpose as any in rock," but that tune and the title track, two ofPaul Kantner's three contributions, are the only ones with elements that stay true to the band's original mission. "Stairway to Cleveland" follows the dramatic and techno-orchestrated "Alien," which at least is better than the generic "Free" preceding it, or the second cousin to "Jane," which is "Mary." It means you have to sift through the Mickey Thomas/Ron Nevison sterilization to find the advertised product: Jefferson Starship music. "Mary" is a far cry from what the Jefferson Starship name implies and belonged on a Mickey Thomas solo disc. Rather than continue the natural ...
