Originally released very regionally (Greenwich Village only) in 1982 on Jack Hardy's Great Divide label, Where Were You Last Night is evidence that Frank Christian was an immense and fully formed talent long before the release of his fantastic (and first widely available) 1995 CD, From My Hands. For fans of the type of literate, bluesy folk made popular by Bob Dylan, Steve Gillette, Tim Hardin, Arlo Guthrie and Donovan, Where Were You Last Night is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. The songs here are chock full of delicately and carefully painted pictures of humanity's quieter moments. Dave Van Ronk's liner notes refer to Christian as an "urban romantic," and it's a good description. His songs are at once tough and exquisitely gentle, while his voice, though not particularly powerful, is always emotionally direct. The real treat here, though, is Christian's masterful guitar playing. As wonderful a songwriter as he is, his sensitive and complex, yet subtle acoustic guitar chops outshine everything else on the record. Whether weaving beautiful, jazzy, spider-like patterns in and out of the vocals on the title track, or playing a gorgeous and finger-twisting neoclassical composition like "Rondo: Rumor for a Roscian Romace," Christian should inspire most other folkies go back home and take some guitar lessons. ~ Pemberton Roach

Includes liner notes by Dave Van Ronk.

Where Were You Last Night album
CD $9.65  Audio Samples
In late 1999, the Dutch label KonKurrent invited Minneapolis band Low into an in-house studio to record one of the label's near-legendary In the Fishtank sessions; bands have two days to record between 20-30 minutes of all new material of their choosing. Also touring at the time were Low's pals, the Australian instrumental dynamos the Dirty Three. Low invited them in, and in the same collaborative spirit as another In the Fishtank session involving Tortoise and the Ex, this half-hour session is the document. What is truly amazing about ...

On A Few Miles from Memphis, recorded by pianist Harold Mabern in 1968, he's joined by tenors George Coleman and Buddy Terry, bassist Bill Lee, and drummer Walter Perkins for a bluesy, rhythm-filled set featuring familiar fare like "A Treat for Bea" and fun originals like "Walkin' Back." There's also the odd inclusion of "There's a Kind of Hush," a pop song that comes out sounding like an old standard here. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford Jr. When record labels like Prestige release two albums on one CD, it's a great bargain for music fans. A Few Miles from Memphis combines the album of the same name and ...

Raven presents the very best of Solomon Burke's recordings for MGM in the 1970s, many on CD for the first time. A pioneering soul singer, Burke's powerful voice and fervent emotionality were much-admired through the 1960s. At MGM, with arranger Gene Page, Solomon deftly crafted a commercial ...

Azeem started his first band Telefunken in 1989, which was a combination of live instrumentation and hip-hop. Years of hard work culminated in their first release (1994) on the then newly-formed OM Records. Soon after, Azeem's spoken word lyrics won him a spot on the Lollapalooza tour, which in turn led to a PBS special, two books, and prestige as the third best performance poet in the country. In 1997, Azeem joined Michael Franti in co-writing songs for Spearhead and then touring for two years as a writer and performer with the band. Finally, in 1999, he decided to focus on bringing together his writing and performing skills as a solo musical act. 2000 saw the release of his first solo EP Garage Opera (Heratik) as well as a track on Afro-Mystik's Future Tropic album. Azeem followed up with the full length album Craft Classic (Stray). Azeem's hilarious vocals and DJ Zeph's funky horn laced beats earned the albums' single "Rubber Glue" the ..2 spot on the CMJ radio rap chart. In 2003 the 12" single "Family Man" (Bomb Hip-Hop) featured the Bay Area master craftsman Azeem spittin' lyrical gems in his trademark sing-song style over a fat Hydroponic Sound System produced track that combines the nasty funk sound of late 60's New Orleans with dubbed out keys and delays. Also in 2003 Azeem toured Europe with the Bomb Hip-Hop Tour.In early 2004 Azeem was the frontman on the VU release Mayhemystics (Wide Hive) which has been nominated for a California Music Award.urbansmarts.com Rewiew"And then we heard Azeem. You, You're A History In Rust
Do Make Say Think You, You're A History In Rust CD  (2007) Digipak

Where Were You Last Night CD music
CD $12.89  5 stars Audio Samples
The fifth full-length from Do Make Say Think begins with a brief, minor-key modal piano and jazzy snare and cymbals intro that sounds an awful lot like an homage to Talk Talk's atmospheric masterpiece, Laughing Stock. You, You're a History in the Rust quickly veers from that intro into more familiar DMST terrain, but Mark Hollis and company's seminal record is an apropos touchstone for this Toronto collective's songs, which are built with similar emphasis on mood, texture, and dramatic ebb and flow. Like its excellent predecessor, Winter Hymn Country Hymn Secret Hymn, Rust was recorded in DMST's favored remote haunts, and the old barns and cottages provide sympathetic ambience for the band's increasingly organic sound. Many of the themes seem plucked -- quite literally on the John Fahey-like "A Tender History in Rust" -- from the air, furtive patterns that appear like flickering shadows before they're given weight by the band's elegant horns, electric guitars, and two-drummer attack. There's a suite-like nature to most of the songs, for which the opening track offers a blueprint of sorts. After its Talk Talk-like intro, "Bound to Be That Way" slowly emerges with an intricate riff which the band then takes through several wardrobe changes -- atmospheric keyboard washes, blaring horns, and guitar rave-ups -- before deconstructing the riff back into its elemental parts. The dynamic shifts ...
