From Anthony Michael Peterson's earliest days with Ronald Shannon Jackson's Decoding Scoeity, through to his work with Oliver Lake's Quartet, this gifted guitarist evidenced a taste for the instrument's romantic traditions, while working to stretch its vocabulary in decidedly modern directions and incorporate elements of jazz, funk and rock into a seamless holistic cloth.
The degree to which he's succeeded can be heard on his first solo outing, THE BOOK OF DAYS. On several selections his background as a classical player rings through in his spectral use of arpeggios and delicate ornaments, and you can even hear a taste of rustic American folk stylings a la John Fahey. But it is his fervent vocalized melodic line and acerbic harmonic voicings on a tune like "Oliver Lake" (where he sounds for all the world like reed innovator Eric Dolphy) that points to the fresh modern style of phrasing Peterson is trying to develop on guitar.
