Altoist Art Pepper was in inspired form during this Tokyo concert, which has also been reissued as part of a huge "complete" Galaxy box set. This particular single CD features Pepper (along with pianist George Cables, bassist Tony Dumas, and drummer Billy Higgins) on memorable versions of "True Blues," "Sometime" (during which Pepper switches to clarinet), "Landscape," "Avalon," "Over the Rainbow," "Straight Life," and the CD bonus cut "Mambo de la Pinta." Throughout, Pepper's intensity and go-for-broke style are exhilarating. ~ Scott Yanow

Rachmaninoff: Orchestra. Works
$47.29 British humor at its best, Beyond the Fringe were a hilarious ensemble of four of the finest cutting-edge comedians and satirists in London at the time: Dudley Moore, Peter Cook, Alan Bennett, and Paxton Whitehead. The routines contained herein are the reasons why this group is so fondly remembered to Brits to this day. Moore and Cook's "One Leg Too Few," the story of a stunt actor -- with one leg -- applying for the role of Tarzan, is easily one of the most famous British comedy pieces ever. Also excellent is Moore's "Song," which is a twisted version of Brecht-Weill's "Whisky Bar." This three-CD set is historically important, too, as Beyond the Fringe served as the springboard from which Moore and Cook formed a lasting partnership that, at least immediately, resulted in 1967's film masterpiece Bedazzled. ~ Matthew Greenwald

| | Joe Williams Everyday I Have The Blues CD (1959) Bonus Tracks
Rachmaninoff: Orchestra. Works
$10.69 Joe Williams emerged as a jazz/blues singer of the first rank on the 1950 Verve album, COUNT BASIE PLAYS... JOE WILLIAMS SINGS, which, not coincidentally, established the newly refurbished Basie band--the so-called "New Testament" edition--as an up-to-date force to be reckoned with. On this well-produced Roulette title from 1959, Williams and the band reprise their former hit "Everyday I Have The Blues" as a swinging kick-off to an exuberant set of familiar blues and R&B standards. Williams's burnished, elastic voice is in peak form as he essays the '30s Basie classic "Good Morning' Blues" (a nod to the great Jimmy Rushing) as well as Big Joe Turner's "Shake, Rattle & Roll" and "Cherry Red." The crisp arrangements by Frank Foster, Ernie Wilkins, and Thad Jones emphasize the bold interplay of brass and reeds, and the superior remaster captures this great band's colorful bite in all its glory.

| | Michel Camilo Solo CD (2005) SACD Hybrid
Rachmaninoff: Orchestra. Works
$15.19 This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
A powerhouse who is equally at home with straight-ahead jazz and Afro-Cuban music, Michel Camilo has been a household name in the jazz world ever since moving to the U.S. in 1979. Surprisingly, Solo is his first recording as a piano soloist without a group. Camilo divides the dozen songs between four Brazilian numbers (including Jobim's "Corcovado"), a quartet of familiar standards and four of his originals, three of which are new. Highlights include Camilo's Oscar Peterson-style stride on "Our Love Is Here to Stay," the romantic "Reflections," a rhythmic "'Round Midnight," the haunting "Atras Da Porta," the majestic "Un Son" and a sly version of Nat King Cole's "Frim Fram Sauce." Throughout Solo, Michel Camilo utilizes a light touch and generally emphasizes ballads and quieter material. Although Solo does not quite generate the same amount of excitement as Camilo's often-classic trio dates, he plays beautifully throughout. ~ Scott Yanow
