The Jackson Southernaires include: Reverend Milton Biggham, Reverend James Moore, Brother Huey Williams (vocals).
Recorded live at Jackson Municipal Auditorium, Jackson, Mississippi on October 29, 1988.
THE MISSISSIPPI MASS CHOIR received 4 Stellar Awards in 1989: Choir Of The Year, Album Of The Year, Best New Artist, Best Gospel Video.
Recorded live in front of an enthusiastic congregation at Jackson, Mississippi's Jackson City Auditorium, this disc gives a roof-raising sampling of the vocal and musical machine that is the Mississippi Mass Choir. The album also provided the blueprint for a string of commercially successful albums subsequently released by the Grammy-nominated choir.
The opening track features inspired vocal work from guest vocalists Rev. Milton Biggham, Huey Williams, and Rev. James Moore and from choir member Desarie Johnson. Whenever the 100-plus-member Mississippi Mass Choir adds a blast of backing vocals, the results are positively earthshaking. An extremely talented backing band lays down thick layers of bass-busy funk, further bolstering these tracks. Highlights include the nine-minute "Near the Cross" and the rousing "Having You There." If you're looking for a can't-miss gospel album, this is the place to go.

Mississippi Mass Choir music CDs
$16.45 (cutthroat pop records)Living in an old house in SE Portland with her beloved husband, Jay, Rachel makes sometimes disturbing yet ultimately sensible songs, mostly on the piano. She’s not a summer-lover and avoids the sun except on cool to cold days. She reads a lot and watches too much tv, and likes to meet strange felines on late night neighborhood walks. She used to get out a lot more but worried frequently about going crazy. Then she had a nervous breakdown and was a hermit for about 8 years, during which she wrote a lot. She writes a lot still. Her music reflects a love/hate relationship with humanity and persistent awe at the beauty and horror in the world. Trying to capture that sweet and sour thing in a song is what she’s mostly trying to do.The forthcoming (July 7, 2009) Susan Storm's Ugly Sister and Other Saints and Superheroes, and her previous three records, Half Hours With the Lower Creatures, 7 Small Winter Songs and Ormolu were all recorded in Portland, Oregon with audio midwife and Jackpot! Studios mainstay , Jeff Stuart Saltzman (Menomena, Sleater-Kinney, Stephen Malkmus). In addition to her own music, she plays in two bands fronted by Chris Robley; The Sort Ofs, and The Fear of Heights. She's a soprano veteran of Portland classical groups Cappella Romana, Portland Baroque Orchestra and Trinity Consort, and occasionally sings w/ Seattle's Tudor Choir. Some have called her a mix of Frankenixon (Sword of Exactly) and Charles Ives, w/ sprinklings of Randy Newman, The Beatles, and Kate Bush. Other names that have come up are Rufus Wainwright, PJ Harvey, American Music Club. A local critic has dubbed ...
