Malaco's Greatest Gospel Hits Vol. 1
$8.85 None of the albums the O'Jays recorded for Philadelphia International in the 1970s were weak or disappointing, although some were stronger than others. So Full of Love isn't quite essential, and isn't in a class with Back Stabbers, Ship Ahoy or Family Reunion. But the platinum album does have a lot going for it, including the major hit "Use Ta Be My Girl," and the heartfelt ballads "Cry Together" and "Brandy," and the captivating "This Time Baby," which would become a hit for soul/disco diva Jackie Moore in 1979. A funk treasure that should have been a major hit was the intense "Strokety Stroke." Once again, the O'Jays worked with Philly's best -- not only Gamble & Huff, but also Thom Bell and Bunny Sigler. Love was a departure from their previous Philly International offerings in that it contained no social or political commentary whatsoever -- with the disco era in full swing, Eddie Levert felt that the market for R&B message songs had dried up. ~ Alex Henderson

Malaco's Greatest Gospel Hits Vol. 1
$14.75 THE DAWNING OF A NEW ERROR contains 33 tracks, including DOA's early singles, the DON'T TURN YER BACK ON DESPERATE TIMES - JOHN PEEL SESSION EP, and the LET'S WRECK THE PARTY album.
A combination of early D.O.A. singles, an EP, and the 1985 Let's Wreck the Party full-length, The Dawning of a New Error is a nice early-career encapsulation for the first and perhaps foremost Canadian punk rock outfit. Originally released on Alternative Tentacles in 1985, this late-'70s/early-'80s retrospective captures the band in all its faux British accent, first wave of (Canadian) ...

| | India Arie Testimony: Vol. 1, Life & Relationship CD (2006)
Malaco's Greatest Gospel Hits Vol. 1
$12.49 India.Arie hails from Atlanta, Georgia, but her smooth neo-soul owes more to the traditions of Philly Soul and Detroit's Motown of yore than the Dirty South rap that dominated her native city in the 2000s. Still, the remarkable thing about Arie is how she deftly marries old school R&B to an urban contemporary sound (one that is greatly informed by the beats and production of hip-hop).
2006's TESTIMONY: VOL. 1 LIFE & RELATIONSHIPS, the singer-songwriter's third album, continues to perfect Arie's unique blend of styles. Smooth and accessible, yet marked by supremely well-crafted songs, TESTIMONY shifts gears effortlessly, moving from breezy tropical tunes ("Good Mourning") to Lauren Hill-styled hip-hop ("I Am Not My Hair"), hitting all points in between. With just the right balance of old school and new, acoustic and electric, and consciousness themes with party jams, TESTIMONY is an important notch in the rising career of this ...
