On their early albums, the Waterboys became known as practitioners of "the Big Sound," an epic, wide-screen musical vision on a par with the contemporaneous offerings of U2 and Big Country, making them the musical equivalents of Cecil B. DeMille. For FISHERMAN'S BLUES, though, they decided to scale things down considerably, departing for a little while from their outsized pop/rock ambitions to embrace Celtic roots, folk, and heavily Dylan-influenced, BLOOD ON THE TRACKS-like folk-rock. The gambit paid off better than anyone could have expected, resulting in one of the band's most memorable, moving albums.
Singer Mike Scott emerges here as a gifted troubadour, a mode he'd explore more fully years later in his solo work. Where he once spun grand statements framed by booming drums and echoing guitars, here he makes simple romantic observations backed by fiddles and acoustic guitars. A surprising nod to country roots pops up as well, with "Has Anybody Here Seen Hank?," but, in the end, FISHERMAN'S BLUES is closer to the Celtic soul of prime Van Morrison (whose "Sweet Thing" is covered here) than it is to either the band's rootsier influences or to any 1980s contemporaries.

The latest project: Inside ThingsFrances Drost's new CD "Inside Things" delves deeply into the life of this startlingly effective and accomplished songwriter. With songs that come from extremely personal places, she really lets the world take a look "inside" her personal life and stories. From the update of an old hymn and added original chorus "Enough", to the emotional, orchestrated passion of "Shatter the Glass", to the classic contemporary title track, through the whole CD, you get a sense of a writer with broad experience and skill. Deftly weaving folk melodies and production with contemporary instrumentation and production, Frances shows power and grace with songs like "In the Hand of the Lord", "Missin' You" and "I Know God". These show her deep Pennsylvania and tradtional value roots, bring a deep level of musicality, but also show authenticity in her character. Then come the emotional stories of "Beside the Barn", a moving story in memory of a lost loved one. "I Can Pray" is a standout as a song as moving as it is true. We may feel helpless in alot of situations, but we can always pray for the person we feel for. Other times as on "Wonderfully Created" and "What You Delight In", we just revel in Frances' writing and easy on the ears vocal style. We all have "Inside Things" that we protect and that affect us deeply. On this album, Frances Drost bravely shares her life, her pain, and her faith with the world. the artist . . . The piece was titled 'If You Have A Dream". The song goes on to say, "...don't let anything dim it. Have faith, keep praying, the sky is the limit".
