| | Best Of Johnnie Taylor On Malaco, Vol. 1 CD Johnnie Taylor Discography of CDs
(2 Customer Reviews)
Given how much of a fixture Johnnie Taylor was on black radio in the '60s and early to mid-'70s, it's ironic that one of his best-of collections doesn't contain an abundance of hit singles. Rather, the focus of Best of Johnnie Taylor on Malaco, Vol. 1 is the veteran soul man's work for Malaco in the '80s and '90s. Taylor may have been long past his peak commercially when these songs were recorded, but artistically, he still sounds like he's very much in his prime. Malaco's choices are generally excellent. Selections like "Don't Make Me Late," "Still Called the Blues" and "Everything's Out in the Open" show why Taylor has fared so well creatively at the label, which has encouraged him to continue taking a classic soul approach instead of catering to the urban contemporary market (something he has pretty much ignored). For listeners who haven't been exposed to his Malaco output, this collection is the logical starting point. ~ Alex Henderson

WINNER: 2006 Singer Songwriter Album of the Year - Just Plain Folks Music AwardsREVIEWS:'Blazing and beautiful. Burning and elegant. Subtle and expansive. Unique and timeless. Malone contains multitudes of rhythm, soul, jazz, blues, smoke and magic. He's a pianist's pianist; it sounds as if he's slept inside a baby grand for years, so intimate is he with the alphabet of the ivories. [Born Too Late] is one for the ages.' AMERICAN SONGWRITER 'Take Tom Waits, Steely Dan, Dr. John, Louis Armstrong, and Harry Connick Jr. , put 'em in a drink shaker, add sweetener, and pour out Bob Malone!Though a bluesy streak runs through these songs, Malone, like Mose Allison, uses blues as a stop on the way to the jazz and elegant pop music that fuels his muse!. Nimble playing and smart, sassy lyrics. There's plenty to like here. ' BLUES REVIEW'Though he came from Jersey and has made L.A. his home ...

$18.99 About Dave StanawayFavorite Music Styles: Folk, Country, RockMusical Influences: Gordon Lightfoot, Buddy Holly, Louetta Stanaway (mother to a household of musicians)Occupation: Teacher (retired), Musician, Guitar Instructor Rewarding Musical Experiences: Making the John Johnston CD and playing in a band with my son, Jeff. Hobbies: SongwritingAs a retired teacher, I'm forever in need of tasks, preferably enjoyable, to fill my time. What could be better than to play and sing with a talented fellow musician, Susan Askwith, at the newly opened John Johnston historic home in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan? The John Johnston project gave Sue and me the chance to create original songs about the history of the area in which we both grew up. Musical InfluencesAs a musician since my early teens, I have played a variety of musical styles. Folk music was my first passion, and this collaboration with Sue has allowed me to come full circle back to my folk roots. This time, however, the material is original and more rewarding.Bringing History to Life through SongIn addition to giving twice-weekly summer concerts at the John Johnston House, Sue and I performed at the Historical Society of Michigan's 2005 Upper Peninsula History Conference, held at Lake Superior State University. We have also brought history to life for fourth grade students at various Eastern Upper Peninsula elementary schools, through a grant with the Chippewa County Historical Society. Sue and I have enough new material to do a follow-up CD. We hope to have this second CD out by the summer of 2006. About Susan AskwithMusical InfluencesFor me, music ...
