Lou Ann Barton didn't have the best of luck in her early career. Incongruously signed to a major label for 1982's Old Enough, she delivered a fine debut that was utterly out of step with the times. Shunted to a tiny indie in her adopted hometown of Austin, she recorded 1986's oddly poppy Forbidden Tones, an album of John Hiatt and Beatles covers that recalled Marti Jones' albums from the same period; it was a fine record, but it was a complete stylistic aberration. Barton returned to her blues-rock roots for 1989's Read My Lips. Cutting out the synthesizers and pop gloss of Forbidden Tones for a more traditional sound and recording with longtime friends like the Fabulous Thunderbirds' Kim Wilson and Jimmie Vaughan, Barton delivers her strongest set of tunes. As always, the song selection is heavy on the covers, including a new, heart-wrenching version of Irma Thomas' "It's Raining" that beats the pants off the too-slick version she recorded on Old Enough. Barton also salutes her influences on solid covers of Barbara Lynn's "You'll Lose a Good Thing" and a rave-up rendition of Wanda Jackson's rockabilly anthem "Let's Have a Party," not to mention the tough-chick standby "You Can Have My Husband." Wisely free of attempts to update or modernize her timeless Texas-style blues-rock, Read My Lips is a rockin' good time. ~ Stewart Mason

Lou Ann Barton Read My Lips Songs Read My Lips Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) The best thing happened to SRV Lou Ann Barton was the singer of Triple Threat, together with Jackie Newhouse, Chris Layton and Stevie Ray Vaughan. This band also had Johnny Reno in sax. We can heard this band in an old bootleg called "First Storm". As we know, in 1978 Lou Ann Barton quit the Triple Threat to pursue the solo carreer.
Is she good? Yes, she really is. But the singer is the leader in a blues band and she doesn't have that feeling that blues legends has. When she quit the band, SRV created the Double Trouble. Five years after, they recorded "Texas Flood" and became one of the most famous blues bands in the world. This CD is good, but it's not like Koko Taylor or something. 10 years after Triple Threat, she recorded the same songs (Sugar Coated Love, You Can Have My Husband, Te Ni Nee Ni Nu, Good Lover) and it's sound frustrating..
I bought this CD because it bring to me strong memories from Stevie before he became famous...

| | Jack Mcvea Mcvoutie's Central Avenue Blues CD (2002)
Read My Lips album
$14.79 Recorded in Los Angeles, California in 1945. Includes liner notes by Frank Driggs.
Jack McVea sports a jacket, tie, and spectacles on the cover of McVoutie's Central Avenue Blues, looking more like a professor than a saxophonist. While he is most certainly the latter, his debonair appearance does mirror the smooth, elegant style of his horn. McVoutie's Central Avenue Blues captures the tenor/alto player in 1945 in a number of settings that mostly emphasize his R&B work. The other central figure of this disc is drummer/vocalist Rabon Tarrant, who joins McVea on 13 of the 23 tracks. Tarrant's powerful vocals on pieces like "Listen Baby Blues" and "Blues All Night" provide an agreeable contrast to McVea's silky saxophone. There's a bouncy take on "The 'G' Man Got the 'T' Man" with singer Cee Pee Johnson and a bizarre, risqué piece titled "Wiggle Wiggle Woogie" with singer Duke Henderson. Although the singers ...
