W/Mary Ann Mccall/Bill Perkins Dick Collins/Bob Saravia/F.Cap
Recorded at a live outdoor concert, this date features pianist Nat Pierce leading a quintet that includes drummer Frank Capp (his co-leader with the Juggernaut big band), tenor saxophonist Bill Perkins, the talented but rarely heard trumpeter Dick Collins and bassist Bob Saravia. Mary Ann McCall, a veteran of the Woody Herman Orchestra, made very few recordings this late in her career, so it is a pleasure to hear the singer interpreting a few numbers (most notably "If I Had You" and "Detour Ahead"). Perk, Collins and Pierce are in fine form throughout the date, which includes three additional selections unearthed for the 1996 CD reissue. Highlights include Roy Eldridge's jumping blues "5400 North," Pierce's moody "Pee Wee's Blues" and "Blue Lou." ~ Scott Yanow Nat Pierce 5400 North Songs 5400 North Review

| | Stan Getz Bossas & Ballads: The Lost Sessions CD (2003)
5400 North
$15.39 First off, these "Lost Sessions" were never actually lost. The music here was supposed to be released as the Stan Getz Quartet's first issue on A&M, and for the usual record company reasons, it was shelved instead. The tapes were in the vault and catalogs, so it's not like they were found in someone's closet. The bottom line is that Getz, already ill at this point, still had the goods. Produced by Herb Alpert (a genius in his own right even if his records don't always hold up), the bossas here are tough, innovative jazz tunes mainly written by Getz's pianist, Kenny Barron. Don't look for the gentle side of Getz that was so beautifully displayed on his early bossa records with Charlie Byrd and Antonio Carlos Jobim. Instead, this is the ...
| | Shelly Manne Yesterdays: Live In Europe CD (2003)
5400 North
$9.89 Recorded live in Zurich, Switzerland and Copenhagen, Denmark in 1960. Includes liner notes by Richard S. Ginell.
Shelly Manne and Norman Granz are two names that one doesn't hear in the same sentence very often. Granz's Jazz at the Philharmonic tours tended to have a lot of flashy solos, and Manne wasn't about flashiness; he was a subtle drummer who knew the value of economy. Nonetheless, Granz admired Manne's playing -- and even though Manne had reservations about taking part in J.A.T.P., Granz managed to persuade him to join J.A.T.P. on a tour of Europe in 1960. Recorded in Zurich, Switzerland, and Copenhagen, Denmark, Yesterdays finds Manne leading a diverse yet cohesive quintet that also includes trumpeter Joe Gordon, tenor saxophonist Richie Kamuca, pianist Russ Freeman, and bassist Monty Budwig. The performances on this CD went unreleased for 43 years, but in 2003, they finally saw the light of day when Fantasy released ...
| | Sonny Stitt Personal Appearance CD (1957)
5400 North
$9.89 Selections from the Great American Songbook make their requisite appearance, as Stitt and company blow through Cole Porter's "Easy to Love" and Duke Ellington's "Autumn in New York" with elegance and seeming ease. The ensemble is laid-back, yet swings intently, and Stitt takes ...

| | Ivo Perelman Ventriloquist CD (2002)
5400 North
$14.39 The last three Ivo Perelman CDs released by Leo Records (Siero, The Hammer, and The Seven Energies of the Universe) had all been recorded in March-April 1998. The Ventriloquist is a fresher studio session from June 2001, recorded on French ground with French musicians -- well, at least they live there. The tenor saxophonist rarely plays with another reedman. This pairing with Louis Sclavis on bass clarinet provides an occasion for less self-centered playing (which is not a bad thing when Perelman plays by himself, since he is such a powerful player). Paul Rogers and Ramon Lopez are a tested free-form rhythm section. The bassist is a man of exception, his round sound dancing with precision even when freed from any constraints. The ...

5400 North
$9.59 Having reviewed some of Hammond organist Joey DeFrancesco's early albums on Columbia, then caught up with him again when he teamed up with the high-flying guitar acrobat Danny Gatton on Relentless, and then lost track of him, the word that comes to mind upon hearing this effort for Concord is "adult." DeFrancesco's earlier work ...

| | Donny Osmond Alone Together/A Time For Us CD (2008) (Import) Remastered; United Kingdom
5400 North
$17.95 Packaged together as part of the 7Ts label's series of Osbros two-fers, Donny Osmond's fifth and sixth albums maintain the lightweight sheen that characterized their predecessors, but does one sense things toughening up around the edges? You bet. Old enough by now to have a loud say in the kind of songs he was recording, and steering further away from the lackluster ballads that he was handling so adroitly earlier in his career, young master Osmond turns in more genuinely heartwarming performances here than at any time in the past -- his version of "Twelfth of Never" is all but definitive, "Young Love" and "Tears on My Pillow" likewise. And then there is his vision of "Unchained Melody," which may not deviate from any previous version but does prove the power of the Osmond vocal chords, even as you're still recovering from his glorious hijacking of "Are You Lonesome Tonight." Of course, you can have too much of a good thing, and whoever handed him ...
