This CD is another typically exciting, virtuosic and often witty outing from the great pianist Jessica Williams. Joined by bassist Jeff Johnston and drummer Dick Berk, Williams splits the program between originals (including "Blues for Mandela" and "Geronimo Blues") and standards; a humorous version of "Beautiful Girl of My Dreams" is a highlight. Although Jessica Williams is at her most adventurous when playing unaccompanied solos rather than with a trio, this is a particularly strong release and a good introduction to her talents. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Jessica Williams All Alone CD (2003)
Song That I Heard songs
$14.59 Jessica Williams has turned out a phenomenal amount of rewarding recordings since her career began to really take off during the 1990s. This solo piano outing recorded in 2002 is among her finest efforts, especially in her refreshing approaches to standards and some usually overdone (and frequently underplayed) war horses. "As Time Goes By" has almost become a cliché due to its inclusion in the still popular film Casablanca, but Williams' quirky approach to it suggests Art Tatum, Erroll Garner, and Thelonious Monk at different times, yet never loses touch with the melody. Likewise, her playful little embellishment added to Duke Ellington's "In a Sentimental Mood" suggests ...
| | Eberhard Weber Colours CDs (2010) Special Edition
Song That I Heard album
$22.10 This three-album retrospective of bassist Eberhard Weber's group, Colours, recorded between 1975 and 1980, is striking musically, historically, culturally, and creatively. As American and British jazz musicians were employing electric instruments to create edgier, funkier, and more stridently knotty music, many Northern Europeans were exploring an entirely different sonic universe: creating another pathway in jazz. Weber's work would help to define the ECM imprint's sound. Weber founded Colours in 1974 with saxophonist and multi-instrumentalist Charlie Mariano, keyboardist Rainer Bruninghaus, and drummer Jon Christensen -- to be replaced in by John Marshall in 1977. Its 1975 debut, Yellow Fields, put ...

| | Don Sickler Reflections CD (2002)
Song That I Heard songs
$13.89 Don Sickler has made numerous contributions as an arranger throughout his long career (though they aren't always properly credited), though this is only his sixth release as a leader. He concentrates exclusively on infrequently recorded compositions by a sextet of post-bop trumpeters, accompanied by a solid supporting cast: alto saxophonist/flutist Bobby Porcelli and pianist Ronnie Mathews (who both previously worked along with Sickler in T.S. Monk's band), bassist Peter Washington, and drummer Ben Riley. Booker Little, whose career was cut short at the age of just 23, is represented by "Bee Tee's Minor Plea" and "The Grand Valse." Sickler's approach to the first tune is more tightly woven than Little's 1960 recording, while the latter piece (a waltz) flows a bit smoother than the original; both arrangements utilize a second overdubbed trumpet for harmony in places. Miles Davis is represented by "I Didn't" (a barely disguised reworking of Thelonious Monk's "Well You ...
| | Michel Camilo Triangulo CD (2002)
Song That I Heard album
$15.79 TRIANGULO was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Jazz Instrumental Album.
This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
The latest album from Santa Dominican pianist Michel Camilo is somewhat of a departure from his previous release, Spain, which was an exploration of the many facets of Latin jazz performed in partnership with flamenco guitarist Tomatito. While there are still Latin rhythms underlying the performances on this release (such rhythmic qualities are likely part of Camilo's genetic system), other styles are explored in combination with Caribbean and Latin harmonies. Another change is that for the first time since his 1994 release, One More Once, Camilo has made his own compositions part of the play list, making up six of the ten-tune program. While his playing is fiery and passionate, it is toned down somewhat on some cuts, showing a gentle, melodic side that perhaps may have been under-played on earlier releases. ...
