Bobby Lamb's Trinity Big Band is a top British jazz orchestra that is perhaps best known for being inspired by Stan Kenton. This set is a bit different in that the first five selections are originals arranged by Bob Florence, in addition to two Don Menza pieces, an obscurity from the Boyd Raeburn Orchestra ("Forgetful"), and an imaginative reworking of "Invitation." There are many fine soloists in the orchestra (including the leader on trombone) and spots for such guests as flügelhornist Kenny Wheeler (who is rarely heard in this type of setting), altoist Pete King, and trombonist Mark Nightingale. The musicianship is top-notch, the arrangements have their share of variety, and this is an easily recommended disc for fans of modern big bands. ~ Scott Yanow
Personnel includes: Bobby Lamb (director); Bob Florence (arranger, piano); Pete King (alto saxophone); Kenny Wheeler (flugelhorn); Mark Nightingale (trombone).
Personnel: Bobby Lamb; Bob Florence; Kenny Wheeler (trumpet); Trinity Big Band.

$6.49 Dave Brubeck's TIME OUT ranks alongside Miles Davis' KIND OF BLUE as one of the few advanced jazz masterpieces to achieve great commercial success. In fact, the widespread popularity of TIME OUT, with its cool-toned ambience, smooth style, and elements borrowed from classical music, helped make modern jazz a mainstream phenomenon.
The ubiquitous "Take Five" may be overplayed, but that doesn't diminish the joy of its complex melodic hooks, its perfectly executed solos, or the swinging slink of its 5/4 signature. "Blue Rondo a la Turk" collages Mozart, cool swing, and Brubeck's own classically oriented piano style, and the airy, delicate "Everybody's Jumpin'" showcases the lyrical splendor of saxophonist Paul Desmond. With bassist Gene Wright and drummer Joe Morello ...

| | Billy Harper Somalia CD (1993)
Trinity Fair music CDs
$13.85 The passionate tenor saxophonist Billy Harper had not been heard on record as a leader in quite a few years when this superlative Evidence CD was released in 1995. Harper (who is joined by trumpeter Eddie Henderson, pianist Francesca Tanksley, bassist Louie Spears, and both Newman Taylor Baker and Horace Arnold on drums) brings back the spirit of John Coltrane, performing a very spiritual and generally intense set of music. The five originals are highlighted by the title cut, "Quest" and the nearly 22-minute "Thy Will Be Done." This CD contains some of Billy Harper's finest playing in years. ~ Scott Yanow

Recorded at the Power Station, New York on October 18 and 21, 1993. Includes liner notes by Gene Kalbacher.

$17.15 William Parker/In Order To Survive: William Parker (bass); Rob Brown (alto saxophone); Cooper-Moore (piano); Susie Ibarra (drums).
THE PEACH ORCHARD is a vibrant live album from perhaps the most beloved free jazz group of the late '90s. It was at this time that bassist William Parker came into his own as a bandleader and composer. While the Little Huey Creative Music Orchestra showcased Parker's vision for large ensemble sound, In Order To Survive displayed his equally strong small jazz combo concepts. In pieces like "Thot," "Three Clay Pots," and the group's theme "In Order to Survive (We Must Keep Hope Alive)," the group moves readily from highly addictive vamps and grooves to extended sections of free meter improvisation, presenting a living history of jazz in the process.
Alto saxophonist Rob Brown, fully featured throughout, is one of the most intensely inventive and expressive improvisers of the present day. On the title track, his keening wails vividly evoke the cries of the Navajo people as the U.S. Army--brought to life by the rhythm section's relentless drive--razes their land. THE PEACH ORCHARD is an incredibly rich document, and ...
