Although altoist Michael Hashim performs eight Fats Waller songs on Keep a Song in Your Soul plus one song ("Two Sleepy People") that Fats helped make famous, the performances actually have nothing much to do with Waller other than the themes being stated. This is essentially a straight-ahead bop date that has Hashim sounding a bit like Phil Woods, with an occasional Eric Dolphy phrase tossed in. Trumpeter Claudio Roditi and pianist Richard Wyands also take several very good solos along the way. If one can forget the fact that these are Waller tunes, and not mind the fact that the renditions (particularly "Fats Waller's Original E Flat Blues," which has the group sounding like Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers) have no real connection to 1930s jazz, the date can be enjoyed. But it seems strange to revive these tunes and then do nothing with them except jam over the chord changes. ~ Scott Yanow

Keep A Song In Your Soul
$15.05 The leisurely paced Today naturally warrants a comparison or two to other mix albums released by Kompakt. Less extroverted than DJ Koze's All People Is My Friends and more sleek than Tobias Thomas' Smallville, it's a straightforward and up-to-date report on wallflower house, custom-made for sulky night people who wish they could live inside the sleeve of Roxy Music's For Your Pleasure. Like Michael Mayer, Superpitcher is a master at sequencing, and he's even more "respectful" to the tracks he selects, with each one averaging well over six minutes in playing time. (Anyone familiar with Kompakt's mixes should know not to expect any turntable trickery or rushed transitions.) All the previous Kompakt mixes made a point to introduce listeners to outside producers and labels, but the setup for this one isn't much different than one of the label's earlier Total compilations, with several recent and upcoming highlights surrounded by picks off Kompakt-distributed ...

Keep A Song In Your Soul
$8.79 With Peter Hook's departure in 2007, prospects for new material from New Order were looking increasingly dim, so the surprisingly workmanlike Bernard Sumner formed Bad Lieutenant to record his new songs. Sumner looked for help to various sources: latter-day New Order keyboardist Phil Cunningham; bassist Tom Chapman; a young Manchester head named Jake Evans for guitar, vocals, and a little songwriting; plus, on a few tracks, bassist Alex James of Blur and New Order drummer Stephen Morris. Sumner can't help but recall ...
