Mighty strange, but the Best of Mary Black, Vol. 2 is extremely similar to the import version of the Best of Mary Black, 1991-2000. The second discs of each are, in fact, identical, and include an album that was never released called "Hidden Harvest." Black is Ireland's premier vocalist. She interprets the tradition in many different ways without ever losing it in the arrangements. Her take on pop songs is to render them through the eyes and ears of the great Celtic folk tradition as well. There are, as would be expected, many fine moments on this set, including her readings of Dougie MacLean's "Turning Away," Thom Moore's "Still Believing," Phil Colclough's "Song for Ireland," and Noel Brazil's "The Loving Time." The second disc features some beautiful duet performances, including a duet with Joan Baez -- live, no less -- on Bob Dylan's "Ring Them Bells," "Sonny" with Dolores Keane and Emmylou Harris, and "Bruach Na Carraige Baine," with Seamus Begley. COLLECTED contains Mary Black's finest and most accessible early '80s works; it's a fascinating way to witness the primarily traditional singer grow into one of Ireland's best musical interpreters. A perfect example is her signature "Song for Ireland," a love letter to the country and its people.
Two outstanding highlights are "Both Sides the Tweed," which features Robert Burns' poem set to music, performed with impeccable harmonies, feeling, and tone; and the 19th century American composer Stephen C. Foster's "Hard Times," which Black performs with a unique ache that is absolutely stirring. The classic and often recorded "She Moves Through the Fair" is performed with the accompaniment of sitar and pipes, giving the song an eerily romantic flavor. It's impossible not to be moved by the arrangement and Black's inherent understanding of what she is singing. The album ends with "My Youngest Son Came Home Today," a classic anti-war ...

Eileen Monger has put together an appealing collection of traditional airs and dances for Celtic harp. Monger, who skillfully plays a harp her father crafted, is accompanied by several talented artists: Mike Billinge on the bodhran (goatskin drum), George Monger on the hammer dulcimer, and Jenny McLeod on the uilleann pipes and whistles. (Uilleann, by the way, is Irish for elbow, referring to the fact that these pipes -- much softer sounding than Highland bagpipes -- are pumped by a bellows under the elbow). The album is well balanced with tracks that range from laments to very lively reels and double jigs, with a good range of polkas, hornpipes, and other dance sets in between. The album's appeal is strengthened by the fact that some of the tracks have interesting histories. "The Wild Geese," for example, is an air that laments the departure of many in the Irish army to the continent following the surrender ...
