| | Ethiopiques 1969-1974, Vol. 8: Swinging Addis CD - Import
Recorded between 1969 and 1973. Includes liner notes by Francis Falceto.
Whether you're aware of it or not, an argument has long simmered in the minds of funk fans. Simply put, did James Brown get the idea for '70s sound from African musicians like Fela, or did they cop the groove from him? Like all chicken/egg arguments, this one seems destined to remain unresolved. Albums like this don't help. The eighth in the Ethiopiques series is but the latest to bring the funk in a serious way. This music stomps and swaggers, dripping with horns, nearly toppling with attitude. This is yet another volume of simply astonishing music, music the hip cognoscenti simply can't believe passed beneath their radar for so long. Most of these folks might crowd the line toward amateur, but their sincerity and fire cannot be denied. Simply astounding music. ~ Rob Ferrier

Truth is, you know this groove by now if you've picked up some previous Ethiopiques volumes, but Vol. 13: Ethiopian Groove has enough fresh artists and touches to keep a sucker for the soul-influenced sound of Ethiopian pop interested. Truth is, too, that it's still a pretty damn fine introduction to said sound for those who haven't dipped ...

$18.99 "Newpoli's specialty is the roots of Italian folk music, meaning classical traditional folk songs played by the farmers of Neapolitan suburbs during the Period where Giacomo Puccini and Giuseppe Verdi were performing their operas…"- Boston Phoenix"Italy took the stage with a dramatic rendition of traditional southern Italian songs..."- Kerry Malloy, Berklee Correspondent - International Folk Festival 2004"It was like being on a wonderful vacation to Napoli - only without the pasta - but the music, dancing and camaraderie served by the band more than satisfied our appetites for a great night out!"- Kathy Cryan-Hicks - Chelmsford World Music SeriesNewpoli is a group of exceptionally talented singers and musicians, all alumni from Berklee College of Music and New England Conservatory, that performs Southern Italian Folk Music, mainly from the regions of Campania and Puglia, integrating a wide variety of styles such as Tarantella-Pizzica, Tammuriata, Villanella and the Neapolitan Canzone, encompassing music from the Middle Ages to the 19th century. Because Italian Folk music, with the exception of a small number of Neapolitan songs, has not received its deserved attention and recognition, either in Italy or abroad, Newpoli, guided by their passion for playing and researching these seldom played traditional styles, introduces to the audience, often for the first time, the joy and beauty of this music while recounting the ancient stories and rituals described in the lyrics. The group has been enthusiastically received everywhere, as the audience, notwithstanding the language barrier, is mesmerized by the vitality, energy and spice of their music. They have performed throughout New England, at venues such as the Berklee Performance Center, Ryles Jazz Club, The Middle East, Dante Alighieri Society of Cambridge and First Night. In 2006 they were interviewed and featured by RAI International, the Italian International public television. They just finished recording their debut CD that will be released in March 2008.Formed ...
