All songs written by Charlie Kohlhase except "To Her Ladyship" (Billy Frazier), "The End Of A Love Affair" (Edward C. Redding) and "Crepescule With Nellie" (Thelonious Monk).
Charlie Kohlhase, a talented altoist who also has a very deep tone on baritone, is heard on his second CD heading a pianoless quintet that also features Matt Langley's tenor and soprano, trombonist Curtis Hasselbring, bassist John Turner, drummer Matt Wilson, and, on two songs, trumpeter Waldron Ricks. Their music is full of subtle (and some not-so-subtle) humor, consistently strong and dynamic soloing, variety, and plenty of adventure. One can hear the influence of Charles Mingus in spots, but in general the playing is quite original and fresh. Highlights include the Art Blakey tribute "Buhaina Checked Out," the somewhat demented "Cryogenisis," a swinging version of "The End of a Love Affair," and "Floating," which features the four horns without any rhythm section. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Incredible Jazz Guitar Of Wes Montgomery CD (1960) SACD Hybrid
Good Deeds CD music
$15.19 This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
John "Wes" Montgomery taught himself to play at the age of nineteen and created a style as influential to jazz guitar as was Charlie Christian's to an earlier generation. Recorded in the early part of his solo career, THE INCREDIBLE JAZZ GUITAR OF WES MONTGOMERY defined standards for hard bop guitar which are as cogent today as they were in 1960.
The album jumps out with the quartet hustling through Sonny Rollins' "Airegin," where Wes performs his often imitated licks with grace and agility. His extended phrases, thematic development, harmonic and melodic embellishment come together in a formidable technique with a heavy swing. An impressive use of octaves and chords coupled with the rejection of a guitar pick in favor of his own thumb allowed Wes' guitar to sing with warmth and with beauty. The lyrical rendition of "Polka Dots And Moonbeams" ...
| | Shorty Rogers Martians Come Back/Way Up There CDs (1999)
Good Deeds music CDs
$10.69 Shorty Rogers was one of the brightest lights of the West Coast cool jazz scene in the 1950s and '60s, and these two albums--MARTIANS, COME BACK! and WAY UP THERE, from '56 and '57, respectively--are both excellent representations of his impressive talent. In addition to his skills as a trumpeter (which are considerable), Rogers was also a noteworthy arranger, and the charts for these sessions bear his unique mixture of old-school swing sensibility (Rogers came up playing with Woody Herman's orchestra) and the subtle, Miles Davis-influenced sound of small-group cool.
Rogers's charts are curious and inventive (he writes arrangements for such instruments as French horn, tuba, trombone, and reeds, for instance), and the cast of talent he assembles is equally admirable. Drummer Shelly Manne, clarinetist Jimmy Giuffre, and guitarist Barney Kessel are only some of the luminaries on hand here. With its combination of laid-back '50s sophistication and bounce from the golden age of swing, it's hard to go wrong with this twofer.
Includes liner notes by John S. Wilson and Jack Tracy.

| | Randy Johnston Detour Ahead CD (2001)
Good Deeds songs
$13.85 If you're a hard bopper with soul-jazz leanings, it is important to have sidemen who have a similar mentality; that is, musicians who like to swing aggressively but also like to groove -- musicians who value chops and virtuosity but realize that feeling and soulfulness are also important. Randy Johnston feels that way; he's a guitar-playing virtuoso who values feeling as well as technique. And thankfully, he has very like-minded support on Detour Ahead, ...
