One of Howard Prince's strong points is his flexibility; the trombonist has thrived in avant-garde settings, but he's also at home playing inside on a hard bop or post-bop gig. Although Prince sticks to post-bop on the pianoless Straight to the Soul, he doesn't limit himself to any one type of post-bop. "Lyd" and "Hardcore" show how intellectual and unsentimental he can be -- these are the type of ultra-cerebral, angular, difficult tunes that scare pop, rock, and R&B fans away from jazz but are enjoyable if you comprehend them and have developed a taste for the abstract. However, some of the material is much more accessible, especially the gentle "I Heard Your Voice," the pensive "Letter to a Poet," and the funky "Gracie Square Blues." Prince is joined by different combinations of players, who range from trumpeter Claudio Roditi and percussionist Cyro Baptista to saxman Donald Harrison and drummer Marvin "Smitty" Smith. Whether he was being lyrical or angular, this decent outing made it clear that Prince wasn't someone you could confine to any one approach. ~ Alex Henderson

How a good-looking Jewish boy from Brooklyn discovered the secret of success in an updated form of mariachi music is perhaps beyond our scope. Then again, it might not be such a mystery after all. Aside from the obvious example of exotica, much easy listening depends upon more than a touch of ethnicity to maintain its musical roots. What Herb Alpert found in Mexican street bands was a previously untapped source of south-of-the-border melody and rhythm. With its unlikely combination of Alpert's cool Chet Baker-like trumpet and the blocky cadences of a marching band, the Tijuana Brass produced a lively, colorful mix that managed to appeal to hips and squares alike.

This re-release, on Atavistic's Unheard Music Series, includes the entirety of the quartet album Imitation of Life and three of the tracks of the Beresford/Honsinger duo album Double Indemnity (plus two outtakes), each originally issued on Y Records. On these recordings from 1980 and 1981, one hears a relatively early example of the conflation of the avant-garde jazz of the time with postmodern tendencies wherein humorous allusions to disparate musics were all the rage. Much of the music has a similar feel to what John Zorn and associates were up to in downtown New York City at the time. In the duets, Honsinger's wry and sour cello contrasts effectively with Beresford, who -- no matter how outside his playing gets -- always seems pulled back into jazzy or romantic areas. But there's more an atmosphere of noodling in search of something than of a conception wanting to be elaborated upon, and after a while a sameness sets in that reduces the music to more of a historical document than a breathing work of art.
