| | Tinsley Ellis Speak No Evil CD (2009)
Nothin' But The Blues CD music
$14.95 Tinsley Ellis has worked hard since the early 1980s to establish himself on the contemporary blues scene. As a result, he has become one of the most consistent, and therefore quintessential, electric blues men. He's also a good songwriter in that he stretches the blues form as far as it will go, and occasionally he crosses into solid hard rock territory. On SPEAK NO EVIL, it seems as though Ellis has been listening to some of Robin Trower's early to mid-period records. And what seems to be at work on SPEAK NO EVIL is Ellis trying to push the blues form in a decidedly more rockist direction without losing its emotional feel. Check out the opening track, "Sunlight of Love" With its hard-driven wah-wah pedals and funky backbeat; one can easily imagine this track on Trower's TWICE REMOVED FROM YESTERDAY. Another number in ...

Nothin' But The Blues CD music
$12.25 The older legendary singer-songwriter Van Morrison gets, the more his recordings become documents of a man trying to come to terms with himself and his place in the world. Some 30 studio albums into his career, 2008's KEEP IT SIMPLE is no exception. There are moments here when Morrison gets in touch with his romantic side, as on the wistfully longing "Lover Come Back" and the love-addled "Entrainment" (in case you were wondering, the title refers to the state of being dragged along). Nevertheless, from the '90s on, there's been a dark, ...
| | Lonely Weekends: The Very Best Of Charlie Rich CD (1999)
Nothin' But The Blues music CDs
$11.59 This is a great collection for anyone interested Charlie Rich's early career at Sun Records. The ardent fan may opt for Bear Records' mammoth, 90-song Complete Charlie Rich Sun Collection, but the 23 tracks on Collectables' Lonely Weekends: The Very Best of Charlie Rich also provides an effective overview of Rich's varied repertoire from the late '50s and early '60s. Rich was, in many ways, the most talented member of Sam Phillips' Sun roster, which also included "Million Dollar Quartet" icons Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Johnny Cash. Rich not only furnished hits for Lewis ("Breakup") and Cash ("The Ways of a Woman in Love") but also was an accomplished jazz pianist and able to demonstrate his unmatched vocal prowess on many original gospel, pop, blues, and country numbers. Rich's swinging, rockabilly hits "Lonely Weekends" and "Rebound" are included in this collection along with lesser-known gems like the solo, boogie-woogie number "Donna Lee" and his version of Perkins' "Blue Suede ...

| | Bobby Mcferrin Spontaneous Inventions CD (1986)
Nothin' But The Blues album
$17.35 Bobby McFerrin is heard in prime form throughout this date, which was the follow-up to his classic The Voice. A few of the numbers are taken unaccompanied, and these include memorable renditions of "Thinkin' About Your Body," "I Hear Music," and "Mańana Iguana." Pianist Herbie Hancock duets with McFerrin on "Turtle Shoes"; "Another Night in Tunisia" (taken from the Manhattan Transfer's Vocalese album) features McFerrin with the vocal quartet and Jon Hendricks; soprano saxophonist Wayne Shorter interacts with the vocalist on "Walkin'"; and an eccentric "Beverly Hills Blues" has "assistance" from comedian Robin Williams. A continually intriguing release with plenty of wit from the innovative singer. ~ Scott Yanow
How do you capture spontaneous creation? Blue Note's answer was to present the widest possible variety of performances on one CD in order to capture the sense of someone who is spontaneous in every performance. They succeeded admirably! Three originals, ...
| | Moonlight Shadows CD (2000) (Import) Germany; United Kingdom
Nothin' But The Blues CD music
$10.49 The Shadows' first trip to the Top Ten of the album charts for seven years since the golden days of their late-'70s revival, Moonlight Shadows was designed for the generation that preferred its music uncomplicated and easy. Despite the accepted brilliance of Hank Marvin in getting a very distinctive sound out of his instrument, here was an album with 16 tracks of contemporary hits ranging from the very recent (at the time of its release) "Every Breath You Take," "Hello," "Against All Odds," and "I Just Called to Say I Love You" back to the 1960s songs "Hey Jude," "A Whiter Shade of Pale," and "Nights in White Satin," all played with the minimum of effort (don't the great ones always make it seem easy) by Hank on the guitar with his trademark reverb effect, backed by an unobtrusive rhythm section. By mass marketing an album such as this with prime-time ...
