Morning Drive
$15.39 Featuring a cast of legendary jazz musicians who have totally fallen off since their glory years, Still Small Voice welcomes back Paul Jackson, Jr. to the studio after a two-year hiatus. On this relaxing smooth jazz record of the highest order, Jackson's guitar chops complement Patrice Rushen and Billy Preston's graceful ivories. Taking a stab at jazz standards, pop, and R&B hits, Jackson eloquently treats each of the compositions with great care and respect to the originals, almost as if he wrote them himself. While Jackson hasn't lost a step in his virtuosity, it would have been interesting to let the other musicians involved in the project stretch out a bit and contribute other perspectives. But make no bones about it, this album is fluffier than a lemon meringue pie, while ...
| | Nick Colionne Just Come On In CD (2003)
Morning Drive
$13.49 With the release of the guitarist's Three Keys Music debut, the label invites smooth jazz and funk enthusiasts to an exciting, funky party that's been happening in the Chicago area for many years. Likening his own diverse musical pedigree (gigs with Natalie Cole, Curtis Mayfield, Al Green) to the similar sensibilities of R&B/jazz great and studio legend Paul Jackson, Jr., Nick Colionne thought it would be appropriate to ask Jackson to play rhythm guitar on the whimsical, cool, funk-edged "High Flyin'," whose all-star lineup includes percussionist Lenny Castro, bassist Richard Patterson (from David Sanborn's band), trumpeter Orbert Davis, keyboardist John Blasucci, and the Hammond B-3 organ of Ricky Peterson. Most of the collection's other 12 tracks feature the tight ensembling of Colionne's longtime bandmates Brian Danzy (keyboards), Dave Hiltebrand (bass), and Ernie Adams (drums). ...
| | Paul Brown Up Front CD (2004)
Morning Drive
$13.35 Principally recorded at Funky Joint, Sherman Oaks, California and The Soul Shack, Van Nuys, California.
Known in the music industry as the "Babyface of Smooth Jazz" due to his enormous success as a top-ranked producer/composer/arranger/engineer for some of contemporary jazz's most recognized talent, Paul Brown steps Up Front with his debut for GRP Records. The Grammy award-winning producer, who has had over 38 Number One hits on the smooth jazz charts offers his solo perspective with special guests Rick Braun, Boney James, Chuck Loeb, Jeff Lorber, and Peter White. Additional production from Jeff Carruthers, Jerry Hey, and many others support the style-guru's interpretations that listeners have come to appreciate. Brown's vocals and smooth jazz guitar offer listeners a winning combination of original songs and great covers that have style, control, that excellent smooth jazz pitch, and a wonderful sense of rhythm. With "Wes Coast Swing," you'll hear Brown with Jeff Lorber on vibraphone playing ...
| | Andre Ward Steppin' Up CD (2004)
Morning Drive
$13.65 Contains an untitled hidden track following " Every Time I Open My Eyes".
The challenge any new young smooth jazz saxman undertakes is trying to compete for airplay on radio stations that are more inclined to play discs by veterans that genre fans know and love. On his second release, Andre Ward makes a solid case for being a passionate and sometimes inventive, lyrical player, scoring winsome, easy-grooving gems like the first single "Every Time I Open My Eyes," the cool hip-hop-oriented "Warm Passion" (which includes the musician's propensity for potent horn harmonies behind the melody line), and harder-edged funk of "City Vibe." He balances this sort of pocket grooving with the sweet soprano ballad for his daughter, "Heaven in My Life." No doubt for commercial reasons, he includes a small handful of cover tunes, with mixed success. His energetic take on R. Kelly's "Step in the Name of Love" would no doubt sound fresher had more popular sax god Kim Waters not just done it (it's a popular tune this year in smooth jazz, with Bobby Lyle also offering a take). Maurice Jacobs' vocal ...
| | Nils Pacific Coast Highway CD (2005)
Morning Drive
$12.59 Although the veteran composer/guitarist's website could use a major update -- it is contemporary to 1998 -- he's right in the pocket of modern smooth jazz with his 2005 release. He comes with a solid pedigree in the genre, having recorded a duet with George Benson (who also once covered "Keep Rollin'," given a trippy-moody makeover here), and working with Rick Braun, Marcus Johnson and Gabriela Anders. But his all-star associations aren't as important as his facility for melody and groove, and he does well on both counts here, beginning with the bright, vibrant Norman Brown-like title track, playing it snappy and funky on "Back Pocket" and showing a more intimate side with "Coming Home." Lively, swinging breezy gems like "Cruisin'" show off a powerful ability to collaborate with some of the genre's best sidemen, including Abe Laboriel, Rob Mullins, Alex Acuña and Paul Jackson, Jr., whose influence on the guitarist is ...
