Freetime album
$9.89 One among many similar-sounding but highly popular albums by premier fusion ensemble Spyro Gyra. The group's songs usually contained catchy melodies, prominent backbeats, and some room for improvisational expression, although it was limited and required quick bursts rather than expansive statements. They were and still are near the top in the light jazz and fusion field. ~ Ron Wynn

| | Charlie Haden Now Is The Hour CD (1995)
Freetime music CDs
$10.89 NOW IS THE HOUR was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Performance, Individual Or Group. The title track was nominated for a 1997 Grammy for Best Jazz Instrumental Solo.
Chralie Haden's Quartet West had been an active ensemble for a decade by the time of this release. As with the group's other works, NOW IS THE HOUR draws from a tradition in existence before Haden first burst on the scene with Ornette Coleman's groundbreaking quartet in the late '50s. The ensemble is joined by a string orchestra for half of the tracks, giving the music a lush and romantic sound. For "The Left Hand of God," Haden delivers the melody solo over a bed of strings, before the piano enters at the midway point. In fact, special mention should be made of the remarkable Alan Broadbent. The quartet's pianist since the outset, Broadbent shows his versatility by arranging and conducting the strings on this effort. Ernie Watt's tenor saxophone is a rich pleasure deserving much wider recognition. The set includes four originals and some fine choices in outside material, including tunes by Bud Powell, Lee Konitz, Charlie Parker, Cole Porter, and Lennie Tristano.
Recorded at Studios Guillaume Tell, Suresnes-Paris, France from July 18-20, 1995. Includes liner notes by Luis Bunuel

| | Art Tatum Live Vol. 4: 1949-1951 CD (2003) (Import) Denmark
Freetime album
$31.55 Volume Four in this valuable series of previously unreleased performances from the remarkable pianist Art Tatum actually starts out a bit weak. The first five selections (which include three versions of "Fine And Dandy") are poorly recorded, with a lot of chitchat from a party. Tatum is matched with some decent, but not world class, local bop-oriented players from Toronto, Canada. However, the recordings greatly improve from then on as Tatum is heard playing on a television broadcast and a couple radio airchecks, including an extensive broadcast from Café Society Downtown in 1950. The repertoire is typical of Tatum during this period; although some of the performances are set pieces, there are enough variations and subtle surprises (along with some wondrous playing) to make this a worthwhile acquisition. ~ Scott Yanow
