Taking their moniker from the Aztec monkey god of dance, Ozomatli displays every bit of the exuberance and playfulness of their namesake, throwing in some of the creature's often-overlooked ferocity to get their point across. Formed in the slums of LA, the band boasts a multi-ethnic membership which often numbers well over the ten core members featured on the album. Legendary for the infectious energy and contagious groove achieved in the live arena, where their shows often spill into the street and become spontaneous street parties, Ozomatli made sure that their self titled debut would do everything possible to capture the live experience in a recorded setting.
OZOMATLI reacts to the chaos and danger of their home town with a wistful, often cynical message: the album's opener, "Come Ves" warns against believing everything you're told, atop a furious backdrop of Latin accompaniment, while the chilling "Coming War" follows today's violent trends to their logical end, fusing cool soul sounds with the staccato rap performance of Chali 2na, who delivers an angry diatribe about the genocide he sees around him, arguing that revolution may be the only solution.

Ozomatli Music Review Average Rating: (4.6 out of 5 stars) Interesting mix. This group is, obviously, very talented.
They span the divide between latin rhythms, home-boy rap and mid-eastern flavors with smooth grace and aplomb.
A most interesting combination. Although, I do not think this is what this group is about.
And I think that is what I question most about this cd.
What is it about?
Ths scoring, lyrics, recording and mixing are good. But it leaves me wanting something.
Is it dance music, (yes, you can dance to this).
Is it rap? (some is).
Is there a social message? (I think so).
And I think that is the question.
What is this group about?
In what context is their music created?
But you don't need a social conscience to enjoy this cd.
It is good music.
And thats universal. Submitted by willis_889 (Salt Lake City, UT.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Chuck D meets James Brown meets Tito Puente and more... No doubt this album smacks of great musicianship, from the rhythmic percussions, to the soulful choruses in spanish. No doubt this album is truly eclectic (a term that is thrown around all too often nowadays, but one which Ozomatli fulfills and expands on), with the merging of rap, rock, hip-hop, ska, cumbia, and a slew of other elements from other music genres. But this iridescent album only gets better with further listening's because of the sheer quality that permeates the cd and the authentic down-to-earth quality makes this cd definitely worth buying. One Of The Best Albums I Own Diverse and full of energy. If any one thing can some up Los Angeles into one entity, Ozomatli can. Many house parties have been saved with this CD! I heard it once in my friends car (He usually listens to pure Hip Hop.) By next pay day, I had my own copy (Iborrowed his until then.) A must have for everyone who oves to dance. Latin Music's Best Kept Secret After searching for the freshest Latin sound I could find, I came across this disc and cannot stop playing it in my car! Ozomatli has the perfect blend of traditional Latin music with a contemporary groove, also mixing in rhythms from the Carribean. Most of this disc is a high-energy party, some of it serious, but all of it too good to keep to yourself. Share this music with your friends. Until I came to CD Universe, I had never even heard of Ozomatli; now, it's my goal to own every disc they ever release in the future, and I hope they come perform close to my hometown. I'll get a first row ticket! These folks are extremely talented and a refreshing break from all that homogenized tripe mainstream radio keeps trying to feed music lovers who are hungry for real music. Ozomatli sticks to the ribs of your soul! Submitted by a reviewer (Lexington, SC USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 0 of 1 found this helpful.
Awesome A great cd, but wrong to label it "latin." It is latin at its core, but really crosses all kinds of genres.
I love this cd!!! Submitted by George (Upper Montclair, NJ) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 0 of 1 found this helpful.

| | Beastie Boys Hello Nasty CD (1998)
Ozomatli CD music
$11.69 HELLO NASTY won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Performance. "Intergalactic" won the 1999 Grammy for Best Rap Performance By A Duo Or Group.
On their fifth album and first proclamation in four years, the Beasties pledge allegiance to the next millennium while rocking out old-school stylee. Instead of pretentiously haphazard schizophrenia, Adrock, Mike D and MCA mold Run DMC boasts, Lee Perry dub freestyles, and introspective acoustic strumming into the best album-cum-mix-tape of the first half of '98. NASTY is the true successor to their sampledelic fantasia PAUL'S BOUTIQUE, as realized by craftsmen looking to do more than just get crazy with the sonic cheese whiz.
"Super Disco Breakin'," "Body Movin'," etc. are all first-rate party jams that the trio can probably come up with in their sleep. It's when the Beasties look towards the new school that the artistic flipping of the script begins. Not just in the lyrics, which are expansively conscious in nature and politically literate in content, but sonically as well. The jr. drum-and-bass of "Flowin' Prose" and MCA's acoustic singer/songwriter turn on "I Don't Know" point in directions at once completely incompatible and positively natural. Just like their mate Beck, it is the diversity of styles that the Beasties are prophesizing as the key to the future--so long as that diversity's in the ...

Principally recorded at Sunset Sound, Los Angeles, California; Ocean Studios,
EMBRACE THE CHAOS won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Latin Rock/Alternative Album.
This multi-cultural Latin-American rock/funk/pop aggregation first came to public attention in the late '90s with an eclectic, groove-heavy approach and a celebratory aesthetic that endeared them to all comers. On EMBRACE THE CHAOS, Ozomatli continues to nurture their broad vision while venturing into new areas. While the album opens on a relatively familiar note with the undulating Latin rhythms of "Pa Lante," the scenario shifts in short order, as De La Soul adds rap vocals to the funky "1234." ...

| | Ozomatli Street Signs CD (2004)
Ozomatli album
$14.05 With STREET SIGNS, Ozomatli has made the kind of album that Robert Plant, Peter Gabriel, and Santana are all known for, by combining an expansive worldview, both politically and musically, with catchy and engaging songs. On this record, the Los Angeles group (one-time collaborators of the aforementioned Santana) presents an aesthetic that fuses 21st-century salsa with urban sounds and social commentary, particularly on "Dejame En Paz" and "(Who Discovered) America?" Ozomatli expands on its global grooves with the cumin-laced, Middle-Eastern flavor of "Believe" and the ...
| | Little Feat Dixie Chicken CD (1973)
Ozomatli CD music
$5.95 DIXIE CHICKEN is the first album by the most enduring Little Feat line-up: Kenny Gradney replaced departed bassist Roy Estrada, and New Orleans musicians Sam Clayton and Paul Barrere rounded out the new group. This line-up went through periodic break-ups and reunions until the death of Lowell George in 1979. The great Neon Parks album paintings were anticipated almost as much as the next collection from Little Feat, the band with which his work became inextricably linked.
This album found them at a musical peak as a stellar 70s rock band who had oodles of swamp blues and funk, with a loose shambling style that spoke of confidence rather than sloppiness. Lowell George was singing better than ever on this collection, notably with the sublime "Roll Um Easy," where his voice was chillingly expressive. Bill Payne and Richie Haywood play their respective keyboard ...
| | R L Burnside First Recordings CD (2003)
Ozomatli music CDs
$14.19 At the time these tracks were cut, 1967 and 1968, R.L. Burnside was working on a plantation in Coldwater, MS, cutting silage. Folklorist George Mitchell was on a mission to record unknown blues singers down South. Mitchell heard about Burnside and paid him a visit, asking if he could record him. That night Mitchell returned to Burnside's place with a case of beer and some whiskey. Ten months later, Burnside had his first release. While these 14 tracks didn't jump start Burnside's career, they are stark, organic, and timeless, just Burnside and his acoustic ...
| | Tribute To Audioslave CD (2003)
Ozomatli songs
$9.89 The fact that Audioslave only has one album makes the intent of this quickie tribute suspect. And though the band's self-titled debut had its weak moments, there's no question that the union of a de la Rocha-less Rage Against the Machine with Mr. Huge Voice, Chris Cornell, is an interesting dynamic that's hard to fake. "The Highway Sun All-stars" -- in other words, the studio musicians hired for this job -- can't ...
