If you asked a hip-hop expert what the main differences between East Coast and West Coast rap were in the late '80s and '90s, you would have likely heard the following generalization: West Coast rappers were about beats and messages, while the East Coast was about rapping technique, flow, and rhyming style. There is some truth to that generalization, but like other generalizations, that East Coast/West Coast scenario was a case of patterns and trends rather than hard rules that could never be bent or broken -- the problem with musical generalizations is that there are usually a lot of exceptions that have to be taken into account. Because they favored a jazzy alternative rap sound and made rhyming technique a high priority, Five Fingers of Funk were usually compared to New York and Philadelphia artists in the '90s. But Pete Miser's group was from Portland, OR, and there isn't the slightest hint of gangsta rap or G-funk on About Time -- this 1998 release brings to mind Gang Starr, A Tribe Called Quest, and the Jungle Brothers, not Snoop Dogg or Warren G. While there are some parallels between About Time and Miser's solo output, the two are not identical. Fingers have the strong Native Tongues influence that Miser's solo recordings are known for, but with a less produced sound and punchy horn arrangements that owe a lot to '70s funk. About Time, you see, is the work of a hip-hop band -- not just a group, but a real band with trumpet, sax, trombone, electric bass, percussion, and real drums (as opposed to simply drum machines). Miser's rapping and DJ Chill's turntable work are surrounded by live instruments, and that separates About Time from most of 1998's hip-hop efforts. Alt-rap enthusiasts are advised to give this CD a close listen. ~ Alex Henderson
This is the second release from Pete Miser fronted The Five Fingers of Funk, the hardest working band in Oregon hip hop. In a scene where "do it yourself" is the code of operation, The Fingers have taken it a few steps further leading the pack in show attendance, regional coverage and independent sales. A unique presentation of traditional hip hop through the use of live instruments. Not only do they have one of the Northwest's finest djs (DJ Chill Blend) but they also boast a dog-tight three piece horn section and a rapper/frontman (Pete Miser) who never lets the energy stop. All this sits on top of a rock solid rhythm section that led one local music critic to write, "if you can't get down to this you must be dead!" With extended touring and a commitment to constant growth, The Five Fingers of Funk have been able to outsell even many signed acts in their region. Their debut release, Slap Me Five (self released), has sold over six thousand copies and continues to sell consistently years after its release. Now with the release of About Time, The Five Fingers of Funk are prepared to make their mark on a national level with a tighter more mature sound.
Five Fingers Of Funk: Pete Miser (vocals); Ted Hille (alto saxophone); Josh Prewitt (trumpet); Curtis Bieker (trombone); Tim Cook (keyboards); Allan Redd (bass); Talbott Guthrie (drums); Todd Smith (percussion); DJ Chill (turntables, background vocals). 5 Fingers Of Funk About Time Songs Purchase About Time CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | 5 Fingers Of Funk Slap Me 5 CD (2001)

| | 50 Cent Before I Self-Destruct CDs (2007) With DVD
About Time CD music
$13.29 Released without the usual flurry of hype, Before I Self Destruct fulfills 50 Cent's contractual obligation to the Interscope label. It also doubles as a throwback album, returning the rapper to the hunger and hatred of his early mixtapes while skillfully recasting him as a wannabe upstart. That is, for the most part. The four radio-friendly bedroom numbers that conclude the album are out of place but fairly good to dime-piece beautiful, with the best being the Ne-Yo showcase "Baby by Me" ("Have a baby by me, baby/Be a millionaire"). As pleasing as these final numbers are, if you leave the room after the macho bruiser "I Got Swag" ("I'm infinitely special/Girl the Lord is gonna bless you/If you do what I tell you to do"), you'll return to a confusingly different album, one that's as glamorous but less vital. The monstrous run of tracks that leads up to this flash and polish can be summed up by 50's "This ain't Tha Carter/It's Sparta!," a witty, ...

| | Bodyjar How It Works CD (2001)
About Time music CDs
$11.29 The fifth release from Australia's punk heroes, boasting a dozen crisp and crunchy tracks all supercharged and swept along by the melodies. Life, love, and the pursuit of happiness are the major themes; disaster and despair are the counterpoints. The quartet may not have the answers, but they do have an unerring ability to get to the core of problems and bring them sharply into focus. From drug addiction ("Feed It") to Columbine ("Falling Down"), breaking up to starting anew, Bodyjar vividly pulls life apart to grapple with the emotions that make lives tick. "Five Minutes Away (When Punk Attack Magicians)" is not an assault on David Copperfield and his ilk, but a seething look at disillusionment, when the platitudes we offer up as comfort become no more than hurtful lies. "Ordinary Lives" is about taking chances, a recurring motif, and how life is chance; How It Works delves into life both good and bad, love and loss, celebrating while still recognizing the inherent dangers. The andrenalized music feeds through the songs with big, thumping beats, guitar riffs shredded by Cameron ...
