One of the key bands in Germany's Kraut-rock movement of the 1970s, Faust took concepts from the experimental avant-garde (sound collage, ambient synth, music concrete, improvised noise, et al.) and applied them to a rock framework. 71 MINUTES... collects tracks from two unreleased albums recorded in the early-to-mid 1970s, RETURN OF A LEGEND and FAUST PARTY. And while this is not an immediately easy set to enjoy, if given the time there is a tremendous amount to be gained from it.
Nothing here comes off as straightforward, though elements of fuzz rock ("Don't Take Roots"), ambient ("Das Meer"), and proto trance and techno ("Munic-Yesterday) all appear in brilliantly mutated forms. 71 MINUTES OF is experimental music in the purest sense of the word: though Faust certainly had inspirations, there was simply no previous attempt to put such styles together. The band mixed and matched disparate sounds both new and old, fixed what wasn't broken, and expected nothing from the mainstream. Inspiring.

Revenge Is Slow is Bluebottle Kiss' fourth album, but the first to be released in the United States. It's about time, too -- and though it's easy to compare the Australian pop quartet to the hugely popular Coldplay, Bluebottle Kiss has absorbed more Afghan Whigs, more Bad Seeds, and more Dinosaur Jr. than the Brit giants. Revenge Is Slow ranges from the country-pop opener "Father's Hands," which would please fans of Ryan Adams, to the sparkling noise pop of "Last Cinema," one of the band's best songs. Tracks like "Hasten the Blows" and "Prussian Blue" build slowly and delicately, and "Gangsterland" is awash in crunchy guitar psychedelia. Jay Ferguson wrote all ten of the songs on Jumpin' the Gunne, an album produced by Bill Szymczyk and the third disc by this offshoot of the group Spirit's. By this time, Mark Andes was gone -- he would join Firefall and later Heart -- leaving his brother Matt Andes on guitar and Jay Ferguson on keyboards, lead vocals, and second guitar, and leaving them to their own devices. There is just something that doesn't catch on here. "At the Spa" and "Monkey Music" both have their moments, but in these grooves there is none of the intensity of their first hit "Run Run Run" or Ferguson's later signature tune, "Thunder Island," which came during the middle of Firefall's string of hits. "To the Island" isn't "Thunder Island" by any stretch, while "Getaway" sounds a bit like a Doobie Brothers outtake. Jo Jo Gunne was a decent concert pairing opening for the Doobies after their Run Run Run debut LP.
