| | Ground Zero Consume Red CD Ground Zero Discography of CDs
Ground Zero/Project Consume, of which this is the first volume, is an extension of leader Otomo Yoshihide's Sampling Virus project (also documented on his solo effort The Night Before the Death of the Sampling Virus). From the deliberately provocative opening gesture of sampling the Korean sacred musician Kim Suk Chul, Ground Zero slowly interrupts the hojok with random sounding chaos. About a third of the way through, the sampling is joined with accompaniment by percussion and shamisen (a Japanese stringed instrument). Around the midway point, sax and drums burst on the scene, settling into a driving rock rhythm. This rock steadiness is displaced near the end, as the hojok disappears in a barrage of excess from the full band. The shimmering finale fulfills the transcendence promised by the opening sacred music. Although many observers feel this is Ground Zero's masterpiece, newcomers to the group would be better advised to start with Null and Void or Plays Standards. ~ Caleb Deupree

| | Shakira She Wolf CD (2009)
Consume Red
$14.39 Shakira's brand new English album She Wolf is an uptempo pop album. It is all about synthesizers and electronic concepts, all mixed with the world sounds that we are used to from Shakira.. sounds from countries like India, the Middle East and her home country of Colombia. She Wolf features a predominantly English track list with a follow up album of new and unique repertoire in Spanish to come in 2010. The title track "She-Wolf " boasts the infectious and energizing sound that made Shakira a household name, with a slightly more dancey/ electronic beat (about 125 beats per minute). Though most tracks on the upcoming album will be in English, Shakira chose to service the Spanish version of the first single, "Loba", two weeks before the English single is launched.
Last time around, Shakira touched upon so many styles she couldn't be contained on one album, splitting Oral Fixation in two. This time, she focuses on one sound only: a pulsating electro-disco that crosses all boundaries and welcomes all nationalities. Such concentration behooves Shakira, freeing her to release her inner She Wolf, a wild wacko who's as coo coo as she is carnal. And for as sexy as Shakira is -- crucially, her music is sexy too -- what really gives She Wolf its bite is her inspired nuttiness, how she laments that Matt Damon's not meant for her, and wishes her ex-lover and his new girl ...
| | Rammstein Liebe Ist Fur Alle Da CDs (2009) Bonus Tracks; Deluxe Edition; Digipak
Consume Red
$17.65 Anyone familiar with the industrial-metal band's dark sense of irony should take one look at the title of Rammstein's 2009 album LIEBE IST FUR ALLE DA ("Love Is There For Everyone") and conclude that this one is a mean monster. Combining the tightness and punch of their 1998 album SEHNSUCHT with the musicianship and elaborate textures of their later work, LIEBE IST is a grand achievement, skillfully dividing its time between razor sharp metal rockers like "B********" or the opening theme song "Rammlied" and nostalgic, cabaret pieces that conjure the spirits of Weil and Brecht at a goth club. Best of the latter is the naked and haunting closer "Roter Sand" but little touches of a sinister yesteryear are everywhere, like the fake vaudeville music in "Haifisch" or the soundtrack strings of "Wiener Blut" which are eventually overcome by a guitar crunching juggernaut. This strange ...

| | Lynyrd Skynyrd Poison Whiskey CD (2005) Import
Consume Red
$18.29 As with just about any classic rock band, it's only a matter of time until the vaults are combed for demos and previously unreleased tracks. And it was Lynyrd Skynyrd's turn to get the rarities nod in 2005, with Poison Whiskey. Focusing solely on material demoed by the early Lynyrd Skynyrd lineup (and spanning a time period of October 1970 through January 1974), this 12-track collection contains several nuggets that hardcore Skynyrd-heads will be interested in. While it's interesting to hear early run-throughs of such soon to be Skynyrd classics -- "Free Bird," "Gimme Three Steps," "I Ain't the One" -- there are several tracks that seem to have been all but forgotten beneath the sands of time. Tops on the ...
