From his early days with avant-garde art-rockers like Slapp Happy and Faust to his later incarnation as a quirky singer-songwriter, Blegvad has always mixed a natural tunefulness with a taste for the bizarre. His solo recordings have grown succesively more "conventional"-sounding, and HANGMAN'S HILL continues the trend, but an artist as deeply, wonderfully twisted as Blegvad could never be less than original. Though the music here is in a relatively straightforward pop-rock vein, Blegvad's strange, often macabre lyrical concerns and stylized, Dylanesque delivery make for an appealing blend of grit and gravy. From the fatalism of "Loss to Mourn" and the title cut to the barbed sociological observations of "Dog," Blegvad serves up some tasty food for thought.

Hangman's Hill album
$14.59 On Quake, downtown cello boss Erik Friedlander teams up with Japan's fraternal rhythm section the Takeishi brothers (Stomu and Satoshi on bass and drums, respectively) as well as alto saxophonist Andy Laster for a date of intimate, knotty new jazz. In working with an electric bassist in this setting, the opportunities for unique tonalities are everywhere and are exploited to some degree as they were on an earlier work, The Watchman. Over the years, however, Friedlander has become a composer of interesting ensembles and Quake's is no exception. What is so remarkable about the performances on this recording are details such as counterpoint; on the opener, Laster and Stomu have equal opportunities to engage Friedlander and each other for a knotty, but exhilarating, ride. On the erratically paced and wonderfully breathless "Wire," Friedlander brings shades of different jazz eras and styles to comprise the body of the composition ...
| | Paul Brody Beyond Babylon CD (2004)
Hangman's Hill CD music
$13.35 On his second album fronting his band Sadawi, trumpeter and composer Paul Brody continues his work in the avant-klezmer trenches, helping to drag that hundred-year-old music kicking and screaming into the 21st century. On Beyond Babylon he shows his unwillingness to be constrained by any ghetto boundaries, opening the album with an extended deconstruction of the Shaker hymn "Simple Gifts" (which features a hair-raisingly skronky banjo solo by Brandon Seabrook), and making use of elements of both dub (on the contemplative and lovely "Timepeace"), and rock (note the guitar parts ...

Hangman's Hill CD music
$21.49 Russian master Aleksandr Sokurov (THE SUN, RUSSIAN ARK, MOTHER AND SON) has produced another majestic achievement with ALEXANDRA. In a rare instance of working from his own original script, Sokurov tells the simple tale of a woman in the twilight of her life who embarks on a special journey. As the story unfolds, Sokurov's deeper purpose is revealed, resulting in a work that speaks profoundly about the corrosive nature of war. Opera star Galina Vishnevskaya is Alexandra. She hasn't seen her grandson ...

Hangman's Hill songs
$23.29 The Netherlands' popular band Trace's 1974 self-titled debut returns in this rerelease which includes two bonus tracks not included in the original--"Progress" and "Tabu."
This is the first release by the Dutch group Trace, formed in 1973 by keyboardist Rick van der Linden (previously the leader of Ekseption) with drummer Pierre van der Linden (from the group Focus) and bassist Jaap van Eik (with various groups). As expected, van der Linden's keyboards pretty much dominate the session, which is a decent effort by progressive rock standards. "Galliarde" blends part of Bach's "Italian Concerto in F major" (BMV 971) with a traditional Polish dance that originated in the 13th century. This piece incorporates a small pipe organ, a Hammond organ, and a mellotron. It segues into van Eik's ...
