| | Jack Daniel's Original Silver Cornet Band Hometown Saturday Night CD Jack Daniel's Original Silver Cornet Band Discography of CDs
Recorded live at The Performing Arts Center, Nashville, Tennessee in June 1981.
In 1972, a photo of a band from the 1890s inspired Dave Fulmer of Lynchburg, TN, to form a new version of a brass band, sponsored by Jack Daniels Distillery. The ensemble caught on for a time, making some records and going on a few national tours. This CD gives one a good example of what the band's shows were like in 1981, although the packaging is not too enlightened. A straight reissue of the original LP, the liner notes are microscopic, the inner sleeve is blank, and there is no listing of personnel. Dave Fulmer functions as the narrator and conductor, and half of the release features him introducing songs and telling homespun tales of times gone by. His delivery and message are charming and nostalgic, but one wishes that there was more music because the band is excellent. The repertoire ranges from turn-of-the-century tunes and semi-classical adaptations of ballads to a bit of Dixieland on "Charleston," "That's a Plenty," and "When the Saints Go Marching In." Despite the packaging, this is a disc worth picking up if found at a budget price. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Rahsaan Roland Kirk Kirkatron/Boogie Woogie String Along For Real CDs (2005)
Hometown Saturday Night music CDs
$11.39 This issue combines two late-period Rahsaan Roland Kirk albums: Kirkatron, begun shortly before the major stroke that debilitated him and shortened his life, and Boogie-Woogie String Along for Real, his first attempt at a comeback and his final recording. Kirkatron hosts three tunes recorded for it, and nine more that were outtakes from the preceding 5000 Lb. Man sessions, and a few from the Live at the Montreux Jazz Festival concert. As such it does contain a number of tunes that define the man at the height of his powers including a cover of Leon Russell's "This Masquerade," the live "Serenade to a Cuckoo," and a fine "Bright Moments." His bandmates on the date include a young Hilton Ruiz on piano ...

Hometown Saturday Night songs
$8.45 Bobby Hutcherson's second quartet session, Oblique, shares both pianist Herbie Hancock and drummer Joe Chambers with his first, Happenings (bassist Albert Stinson is a newcomer). However, the approach is somewhat different this time around. For starters, there's less emphasis on Hutcherson originals; he contributes only three of the six pieces, with ...

| | Beth Orton Central Reservation CD (1999) Bonus Tracks; Australia
Hometown Saturday Night songs
$19.79 Like Orton's debut TRAILER PARK, CENTRAL RESERVATION combines folk-pop reminiscent of Sandy Denny and Nick Drake with '90s production sensibilities. While the first record benefited from some well-placed electronic touches, CENTRAL RESERVATION is more organic, the slightly jazzy arrangements based largely around acoustic instrumentation. The production here is not spare however, as Orton makes good use of a string section, the piano work of Dr. John and the vocals of Terry Callier (with whom she recorded the EP BEST BIT).
The cool detachment of Orton's Sandy Dennyish voice keeps the inviting, friendly arrangements from getting too warm and fuzzy, even when her guitar and voice are the sonic focus. Guest producers David Roback (of Opal and Mazzy Star fame) and Ben Watt (half of Everything But The Girl) lend a good deal to the moody soundscapes, particularly ...
| | Brass Monkey Live In Time & Space CD (2001)
Hometown Saturday Night album
$10.09 Relentless drums, rumbling tuba, and wailing horns...nothing kicks the party into high gear like a smokin' brass band! Now you don't have to trek to New Orleans to catch second-line fever - the Bay Area's own BRASS MONKEY BRASS BAND (BMBB) brings the infectious energy and funky good times to the West Coast and beyond.BMBB is a powerhouse 8-piece in the style of New Orleans' own Dirty Dozen and Rebirth Brass Band, with the traditional lineup of tuba, saxes, trumpets, trombones, bass drum and snare. BMBB's wide repertoire ranges from New Orleans classics like "When The Saints Go Marching In" to danceable favorites by a variety of artists from Led Zeppelin to Roger & Zapp, plus their own irrepressibly funky originals. BMBB originally formed to play a Fat Tuesday party in 1999 by Bay Area tuba man Jon Birdsong (Beck, Victoria Williams, Beth Orton) and drummer Kevin Stevens (Meow Meow, The New Morty Show). The success of this one-off show inspired BMBB's eight members to start writing and playing together on a regular basis while maintaining their sideman gigs with greats including Sly & the Family Stone, Santana, Boz Scaggs, Minnie Driver, KC and the Sunshine Band, Donovan, Thomas Dolby, Howard Tate, Pharoah Sanders, The Glenn Miller Orchestra, ...
