René Touzet's 1950s work is somewhere between that of Tito Puente and Martin Denny, neither as exciting and authentically Latin as the former, nor as kitschy and entertainingly fake as the latter. Perez Prado, of "Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White," may be a good touchstone, but Touzet's music has a deeper Latin groove, closer to that of Xavier Cugat or the underappreciated Desi Arnaz (whose skills as a bandleader were usually overshadowed by his wife's as a slapstick artist). Touzet's percussion-heavy arrangements are clattering and propulsive, with the genuine sense of forward motion that the best mambos and meringues (which the majority of these 22 tracks are) always have, and they're invariably driven by his own highly rhythmic, syncopated piano, which pushes the singers and horn players along without dominating the proceedings. The collection features both hits like the infectious movie theme "El Cid," "Mambo Inn," or his excellent arrangement of the classic "Siboney" alongside less-familiar album tracks and singles. The remastering is excellent, and this is a perfect introduction to a bandleader who deserves much wider renown. ~ Stewart Mason Best Of Rene Touzet & His Orchestra Music | List Price | $14.99 (You save $1.90) | | Category | Rock/Pop Albums, International CDs, Pop, Latin, Easy Listening, Spanish, Latin Pop, Exotica, Greatest Hits Collections, Tropical | | Label | GNP / Crescendo | | Orig Year | 1994 | | All Time Sales Rank | 148521 | | CD Universe Part number | 1066644 | | Catalog number | 2000 | | Discs | 1 | | Release Date | Jun 24, 1994 | | Studio/Live | Studio | | Mono/Stereo | Stereo |
Best Of Rene Touzet & His Orchestra Songs Best Of Rene Touzet & His Orchestra Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) A Latin Classic with Class As a young pianist in a Latin band in the 1960s, I loved Rene Touzet's Latin songs which have become classics because of the passion within his arrangements(i.e., Pa'Bailar etc.)and his interpretations of Anglo American songs which, again, he made into classics with the Latin audience (i.e., Julie Is Her Name). What makes this album even more special than it already is, it's that I heard him play these songs live at public dances in Southern California ballrooms in the 1960s. At one of those dances, I was with the local band that played intermission for the Maestro, Rene Touzet and his Orchestra. "Julie Is Her Name" became my theme song with our group's following, and our repertoire was filled with songs from this album. If you love to dance or just love and enjoy classy Latin classics, this album of the Maestro and His Orchestra is for you. Enjoy!!! Listen to the Master at Work In a word it is "professional". The arranging, the musicianship, the melodies, rich harmonies and rhythms go together to create a really polished sound. Another plus is there is plenty of variety on the CD in terms of tempos and rhythms & instrumentation. So if you enjoy the trio sound of piano, bass, drums you'll find it here. If you enjoy rhythm section and horns it's here, if you enjoy vocals its here. I sincerely hope GNP release more of Rene's music. Submitted by a reviewer (Wellington, NZ) Was This Review Helpful?
