Includes the albums, THE SEEDS/TRAVEL WITH YOUR MIND/RAW & ALIVE.
As mid-'60s L.A. garage bands go, the Seeds were perhaps the most primitive, which isn't necessarily a virtue. Whereas the Standells had good lyrics, the Leaves could write pop, and Love was gifted beyond comparison, Sky Saxon and company had to settle for attitude and an unintended comicalness. Their debut record is just that. It's comprised of snotty boy-girl songs and teeters on the edge of musical ineptness, though it does contain the garage classic "Pushin' Too Hard" (whose arrangement is recycled at least once here). The other significant tune is "Can't Seem to Make You Mine," which features a repetitive, haunted-house guitar riff. The rest of the record, though fairly forgettable, still reinforces the truth that pure punk appeared long before the Sex Pistols. ~ Peter Kurtz Seeds & Stems Seeds Songs | 1. | Can't Seem To Make You Mine |

Seeds album
$41.75 This 4-disc box is an anthology expanded from the multi-volume Rhino NUGGETS series--originally produced by Lenny Kaye as a 2-LP collection in 1972--that traces the roots of regional American garage-punk/psychedelic bands like the Seeds, the Electric Prunes and the Standells. The accompanying booklet includes an introduction by Lenny Kaye and a track-by-track guide by Mike Stax, editor of the garage-punk fanzine Ugly Things.
Includes liner notes by Bill Inglot, Lenny Kaye, Greg Shaw, Alec Palao and Mike Stax.
Digitally remastered by Bill Inglot and Dan Hersch (DigiPrep, Hollywood, California).
A compilation that actually defined a genre, this sent out musical ripples that influenced innumerable bands, from the Damned to R.E.M. Compiler Lenny Kaye even gave the genre a name: punk. Although the music was later better known as "garage," Kaye--himself about to pioneer 70s punk as Patti Smith's guitarist--was onto something when he asserted that America's aggressive teen bands of the mid-60s were the original punks. To prove that this was not an isolated, parochial movement, Kaye included not only Top 40 hits such as the Castaways' "Liar, Liar" and the Count Five's "Psychotic Reaction," but also buried treasures like the Remains' classic "Don't Look Back" and the Chocolate Watch Band's "Let's Talk About Girls."

| | Neil Young American Stars 'N' Bars CD (1977) Remastered
Seeds CD music
$6.15 All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology.
Released right after the career albums TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT and ZUMA and right before the big-selling COMES A TIME and RUST NEVER SLEEPS, this country-rocky 1977 album is often forgotten. But it introduced the sensational "Like A Hurricane," which has remained a staple of Young's concerts, and such quirky favorites as "Homegrown," an ode to marijuana, and "Old Country Waltz," which is exactly what it says it is. As Neil Young's legendary 1970s albums go, it might be a bit of a tossed-off affair, but most country-rockers can only dream of making one album this good.
2003 remastered reissue of 1977 album. This roots 'n' rock album features guests, Emmylou Harris & Linda Ronstadt, & the fan favorite 'Like A Hurricane'. The album initially peaked at #21 & achieved gold status. Nine tracks. Reprise.
Personnel: Neil Young (vocals, guitar, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, harmonica); Ben Keith (vocals, guitar, steel guitar, dobro); Ralph Molina (vocals, drums); Emmylou Harris, Nicolette Larson, Linda Ronstadt, Billy Talbot (vocals); Frank "Poncho" Sampedro (guitar, acoustic ...
| | Neil Young On The Beach CD (1974) Remastered
Seeds music CDs
$8.99 After working his way through loss and chaos on the brilliant TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT (recorded in 1973, but not released until 1975), Neil Young deftly exorcised any lingering demons with 1974's ON THE BEACH. The album opens with the saunter of the aptly titled "Walk On," followed by the utterly gorgeous, Wurlitzer-tinged "See the Sky about to Rain."
The set also features a trio of scathing songs--"Revolution Blues," "Vampire Blues," and "Ambulance Blues"--that address issues important to Young, both social and personal. It is good to hear Young back with such bite and vitriol, especially after the broken desperation of TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT. But while ON THE BEACH is edgy and deeply felt, it also manages to sound liberating and relaxed, with glimmers of hope and humor peeking through the spare, evocative arrangements. Inexplicably unreleased on CD until 2003, ON THE BEACH is both unflinching and resilient, and easily stands as one of Young's finest albums.
Personnel: Neil Young (vocals, guitar, banjo, harmonica, Wurlitzer organ); Neil Young (Wurlitzer piano); Ben Keith (vocals, guitar, slide guitar, steel guitar, dobro, Wurlitzer piano, organ, Wurlitzer organ, drums, background vocals); Graham ...
| | Clear Light CD (1967)
Seeds songs
$11.59 Kind of a minor league version of the Doors, Clear Light were a West Coast phenomenon, and although they didn't last too long, were an interesting group. A very good slice of Los Angeles psychedelia, Clear Light were a six-piece band that combined folk, rock, psychedelia, and even a touch of classical to their sound. The end result, though, is a little ponderous and pretentious, but strangely listenable. The big hit off this album (produced by Paul Rothchild and engineered by Bruce Botnick) was "Mr. Blue," a psychedelic folk song written by Tom Paxton. It's over six-minutes long and a bit overbaked, but it does have an odd appeal. The finer moments are guitarist Bob Seal's psychedelic folk-rock songs, namely "With All in Mind" and "They Who Have Nothing." Singer Cliff DeYoung went on to have a successful acting career, bass player Doug Lubahn played on the early Doors albums, Dallas Taylor went on to drum for Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young and John Sebastian, and keyboardist Ralph Schuckett became one of the more popular West Coast session players and arrangers. A lot of talent in a short-lived ensemble. Dated but charming West Coast psychedelia. ~ Matthew Greenwald

| | If I Were A Carpenter: The Very Best Of Bobby Darin: 1966-1969 CD (1999) (Import) Germany
Seeds CD music
$14.05 To much of the world, Bobby Darin is simply the Sinatra-indebted showman who brought swing a generation forward with such hits as "Mack the Knife" and "Beyond the Sea." Looking a bit further, as THE VERY BEST OF BOBBY DARIN 1966-1969 does, it becomes apparent that Darin changed radically with the times. By the mid-'60s, he'd become a literate, socially conscious folk-rock troubadour. What's even more surprising is that ...

| | Ron Holden Love You So CD (1960)
Seeds songs
$6.45 All songs written or co-written by Ron Holden except "Gee, But I'm Lonesome" (Bruce Johnston).
Ron Holden's "Love You So" is a mesmerizing, metronomic record that Brian Eno might have consulted while composing Another Green World's "Golden Hours." Bob Keane of Del-Fi Records purchased the "Love You So" master and released it nationally on his Donna subsidiary in 1960, yielding a Top Ten pop hit. Holden's album of the same name contains "Love You So" and its B-side, "My Babe," as well as "Gee, But I'm Lonesome," a follow-up single that "bubbled under" Billboard's Top 100. Future Beach Boy Bruce Johnston, with nary a trace of his later surf 'n' sand predilections, wrote or co-wrote every song on Love You So with the exception of the two sides of Holden's first Donna single. The songs include straight-ahead rockers ("My Babe," "Your Line Is Busy"), pop ballads (the lovely "Let No One Tell You"), and a pair of "Love You So" clones that make use of the same herky-jerky rhythm and minimalist woodblock percussion. [Del-Fi reissued Love You So on CD in 1994 with the first five songs appearing in stereo.] ~ Greg Adams
