Clocking in at 30 tracks, this is a top-heavy collection of surf sides the Challengers cut for the GNP/Crescendo label. As the group never really had a hit, this is arguably all the Challengers you might ever need for the collection. But it is grade-A surf music, extremely well played with various session ringers like Hal Blaine, Jim Keltner, Steve Douglas, and Paul Johnson brought in on various numbers. ~ Cub Koda

Killer Surf: The Best Of The Challengers album
$13.15 Two Chantays albums on one CD, comprising much of the surf band's early '60s repertory. The "Move It" that opens the disc is not the Cliff Richard song but a slower, raunchier number with vocal choruses carrying a lot of the melody. "Maybe Baby" is the Buddy Holly song, however, and the group does a decent job of singing it. Unfortunately, ...

Killer Surf: The Best Of The Challengers CD music
$12.65 WRITING THE ALBUM If you were to ask Coltron James to describe the experience of writing his debut album, Tell Me SincerelyâŠ, one word would come to his mind: âCathartic!â Coltron began writing for Tell Me Sincerely⊠in August 2006. âThis musical compilation is a product of emotional and spiritual unrest,â he says. âI just had a lot of questions about life, love and a lot of restlessness about the future. Taking the time to sit down and write all of my feelings has been such an emotional release for me.â âThe technicalities of producing and recording Tell Me SincerelyâŠ,â Coltron recalls, âwere a creatively challenging, but rewarding, process.â He reflects, âProduction can sometimes be an all-consuming thing, taking over a lot of your time and resources. But with all of these inherent stresses, I still wouldnât trade the experience [of writing and singing] for anything.âHe eulogizes his production team: âItâs all in the talent you work with,â he says. âThe professionals I collaborate with have a really good ear and an innate ability to hear my ideasâas Iâm able to sing and communicate themâand bring them to musical life without hurting the original integrity of the idea.âWhen asked how he feels about his performances, Coltron laughingly grimaces, âAs many of my friends know, Iâm somewhat of a perfectionistâwhich, if you can imagine, is good at times and bad at others. Like for example, sometimes Iâll hear one of my records one day and think my vocal mix sounds good, and then the next day hear the same mix and think, âWowâŠthis is rancid. We have to re-mix all of thisâ. Iâm super critical of my workâŠoften times putting up a mic in the middle of mixing session because I wasnât happy with one of my vocal takes,â he concedes.âBut despite my scrupulous self-criticism,â he grins, âIâm overall proud of my first [album] effort, and am now just looking forward to completing the writing and production of my second album.âORIGINS Coltron describes his passion for music: âIâve been involved in the performing arts since around the age of 10, and for some reason musical expression has always been the form of art that has, for lack of a better definition, spiritually moved me.â He adds, âFor me, within music there is such an strong exchange of feeling and emotion thatâs irreproducible any other way.â Coltron James was born in the sunny state of Arizona. At an early age, Coltron discovered his love for performing arts while doing independent and industry film work, making PSAâs for radio, and performing in numerous plays. As a young man, Coltronâs appreciation for music was evident. ...
