| | George Benson Greatest Hits Of All CD (2003) Remastered
Heart Of Cuba CD music
$10.19 Recorded between 1976 & 1998. Includes liner notes by Don Heckman.
Basically, this "greatest hits of all" is simply that: the highest-charting tracks in George Benson's long career -- highest-charting pop and adult contemporary tracks, that is. Benson had been on the scene over a decade before signing with Warner Bros., and many of his jukebox and R&B hits were recorded for Creed Taylor's CTI label. Some of Benson's recorded work that held those hits has been reissued in the past two years. Of the Warner material, they have gauged success by chart placement -- not sales, not radio play, not artist choice. Therefore, while the stellar tracks from Breezin', namely "This Masquerade," which charted at number one on pop and R&B in Billboard, and its follow-up, the album's title track, kick the ...

| | Pato Banton Collections CD (1995)
Heart Of Cuba songs
$11.45 This compilation grabs the best of Pato Banton, sweeping back to the DJ's debut in 1988 and bringing it forward with cuts recorded in 1994. There's 14 tracks in all, nicely weighted between earlier cultural material, uplifting anthems, and the humor-laced numbers. From the militant "Never Give In" to the unifying "One World (Not Three)" and on to the seminal comic routine of "Don't Sniff Coke," the listener is treated to every facet of the performer. Banton's music has changed dramatically over the years, beginning with solid roots and diversifying from there. Flashes of funk, sophisticated R&B, dancehall, and rap would slide in over time, but the beats have never flagged and the songs remain decidedly danceable. As a bonus there's a soca-fied version of the old favorite "Bad Man and Woman" and a pair of new songs -- the dancehall-flavored "Tudo De Bom" and an exhilarating cover of the Equals' hit "Baby Come Back," which guest stars three members of UB40. What more could listeners ask for? ~ Jo-Ann Greene
Includes liner notes by Sig Sigworth.
Producers: Stoker, Pato Banton, G. T. Haynes, The Reggae Revolution, Drummie Zeb.

| | Xit Plight Of The Redman CD (1972)
Heart Of Cuba album
$15.05 Unfairly criticized for having one sound, Motown actually released records of many genres and styles. As is evident on Plight Of The Redman by Xit, a band of Native Americans from Albuquerque, NM. Originally released on the Rare Earth label in 1972, the title explains the consciousness and relevancy of the music. Apocalyptic tom tom beats and eerie chants introduce "Beginning," more of the same with "Nihaa Shil Hozho" a seven minute odyssey that was the only single released from this album in the 70's. It's odd that "I Was Raised" never was a single, it's commercial with a heavybottom Motown beat, a strong ...
