Ida Cox was one of the most talented of the classic blues singers of the 1920s. This Black Swan CD has 20 of her first 32 recordings and, although one regrets that it is not a "complete" series (hopefully the dozen other titles will be reissued by Black Swan eventually), the music is consistently enjoyable and timeless. In fact, quite a few of the lyrics (many of which were written by Cox) were later permanently "borrowed" by Jimmy Rushing and Joe Williams; the first stanza of "Goin' to Chicago" was taken from "Chicago Monkey Man Blues" and "Bear-Mash Blues" has a couple of Williams' best lines. When one considers that the music on this CD is taken from 1923-24, it can certainly be considered ahead of its time! Most of the musicians backing Ida Cox are excellent, particularly pianist Lovie Austin and (on five numbers) cornetist Tommy Ladnier and clarinetist Jimmy O'Bryant. The recording quality (even with some surface noise) has been greatly cleaned up for this reissue and Cox's singing is very easy to understand. Although uncrowned, Ida Cox (who after retiring in 1945 came back for a final recording in 1961) can still communicate to today's listeners, something than can be said about very few other singers from 1923. ~ Scott Yanow

Uncrowned Queen Of The Blues CD music
$9.95 All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology.
"Trouble Is..." was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance.
After releasing a debut that drew raves from people such as James Brown and B.B. King, Kenny Wayne Shepherd followed it up with an album that demonstrates how much musical growth this childhood prodigy has experienced in two years. On TROUBLE IS..., Shepherd's playing still reflects the huge influence of the late Stevie Ray Vaughan (particularly on the instrumental title track that finds him joined by Double Trouble and Reese Winans), but new singer Noah Hurt also colors everything with a growl reminiscent of Paul Rodgers.
Moving slightly away from the country-blues of LEDBETTER HEIGHTS, Shepherd's strong rhythmic touch shines on everything ...
| | Jimmy McGriff I've Got A Woman CD (1963)
Uncrowned Queen Of The Blues music CDs
$9.85 Even more than his Hammond-tickling soul-jazz contemporaries, Jimmy McGriff had a knack for blending the rootsy blues and jazz flavors of the idiom with straightforward pop accessibility. I'VE GOT A WOMAN, McGriff's first album on the Sue label (reissued on CD by Collectables Records) is a superb example of the artist's crossover tendencies. His cover of Ray Charles's R&B classic "I've Got a Woman," in fact, ...
| | Koko Taylor Royal Blue CD (2000)
Uncrowned Queen Of The Blues songs
$14.35 Principally recorded at Chicago Recording Co. and Streeterville Studios, Chicago, Illinois.
ROYAL BLUE was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album.
For her first album in seven years, Koko Taylor returns with a flurry of gritty material and a roster of guest royalty befitting the Queen of the Blues. Kicking things off with the fiery "Save Your Breath," Taylor keeps the temperature high with swaggering originals like the stop-start "Don't Let Me Catch You (With Your Drawers Down)" and the gutbucket blues "Ernestine" (featuring Johnnie Johnson's supple piano playing). The most impressive self-penned number is "The Man Next Door," a duet with Keb' Mo' with a stripped-down arrangement featuring a reigned-in vocal turn by Taylor goosed along by Mo's twangy National Steel guitar and wailing harmonica.
Elsewhere, the Queen mixes it up with young hotshot Kenny Wayne Shepherd (a searing cover of Melissa Etheridge's "Bring Me Some Water") and meets up with regal counterpart B.B. King (the crackling "Blues Hotel"). Taylor also has fun leisurely tearing into Ray Charles's "But On The Other Hand" and maintaining her bawdy image with the no-nonsense "Keep Your Booty ...

Uncrowned Queen Of The Blues music CDs
$11.49 Matthew Pryor has let the sun shine his way with his side band the New Amsterdams and he attempts to let out any sentimentality riddling his system. This sad-core singer/songwriter made lush indie rock poetry with his other band the Get Up Kids and his cheerless lyrics were raw and wounded, and hardcore was finally able to shed its callused rock skin. The New Amsterdams' debut Never You Mind placates the frustration in a wispy, ...
