MI MEDIA NARANJA is Labradford's defining moment. In the reconstructionist spirit of what the media likes to call "post-rock," this Richmond, VA band makes mostly instrumental music that gleefully breaks down stylistic barriers. MI MEDIA NARANJA, the band's most fully realized effort, eschews traditional "rock" song structures, and moves instead toward what could be the soundtrack to some long-lost art film. In fact, film music is an important touchstone here, as the twangy spaghetti-western guitar sound associated with Ennio Morricone is an important element of the sound. That moody, cinematic aesthetic combines with a seemingly Krautrock-inspired use of electronics to create one of the most original sounds of the '90s. For Labradford newcomers, this is the best place to start.
4th AlbumQ (5/01, p.73) - "...[Their] 4th and best album takes their less-is-more aesthetic to its natural apotheosis....chilling and fascinating..." Option (3-4/98, p.95) - "...[oozes] atmosphere and romance and suspended dread and limitless vistas...delivered with an even hand and a subtle touch..." Melody Maker (12/20-27/97, pp.66-67) - Ranked #46 on Melody Maker's list of 1997's "Albums Of The Year." Melody Maker (11/1/97, p.46) - "...the way Labradford connect with sensations...takes them way beyond pop or rock or indie....it's a sonic experiment, designed to induce feelings of helplessness." Mi Media Naranja album
$12.19 Neutral Milk Hotel leader Jeff Mangum is a popster who hears interstellar sounds as natural ingredients of his "pop." He was weaned with the inevitable four-track in his bedroom, schooled on a record collection stacked with John Cage and Captain Beefheart as well as the Beatles and the Kinks. There is an instant emotional intensity to Neutral Milk's music, and the ...

| | Godspeed You Black Emperor F# A# (Infinity) CD (1998)
Mi Media Naranja music CDs
$11.89 "We are trapped in the belly of this horrible machine, and the machine is bleeding to death." Few albums begin with such promise and foreboding, but this first full-length from Canadian genius collective Godspeed You Black Emperor! succeeds in the first few moments. F# A# (Infinity) contains three compositions that run the gamut from grotesque to sublime. The term "composition" seems an appropriate one to use as this band does not write songs. Each piece is at least 14 minutes in length, consisting of three to four sections. The band, a nine-member unit consisting of guitar, drums, bass, strings, keyboard, ...

| | Godspeed You Black Emperor Yanqui U.X.O. CD (2002)
Mi Media Naranja CD music
$12.89 From the bombs dropping on the cover to the slow buildups towards destruction and post-rock beauty in the compositions, this is Godspeed You Black Emperor at its most stripped-down, straightforward, and unsparing. Indie-rock icon Steve Albini produced YANQUI U.X.O., and his trademark extreme dynamics suit this shadowy Canadian collective well, weighing down on the roots of their whisper-to-frenzy style so they can freely branch off into new realms. The opener "09-15-00" departs into twangy, lounge-like territory not out of place for a Sergio Leone-cum-David Lynch nightmare (though it's apparently about Israel). "Rockets Fall on Rocket Falls" raises dark towers from shaky foundations of shivery Phillip Glass-style ...

| | Mark Taylor After Hours CD (2002)
Mi Media Naranja album
$14.79 Working with fellow Origin labelmates, alto/soprano saxophonist Mark Taylor delivers his maiden album, featuring four compositions written by him or by the piano player on the session, Whitney Ashe. The remaining four are works similarly fashioned out of the modern jazz mold. Taylor is one of those younger jazz players who perceives this musical genre has something more than dazzling technique, improvisations on standard pop material, or toe-tapping swing. The approach of these Young Turks is more intellectual and thoughtful. That creative format is best expressed in their own material or that of musicians with similar perspectives on the music. Thus, "Walker Evans" is a soft but thoroughly thoughtful vehicle for Taylor's alto. Somewhat to the musical left is Taylor's "After Hours," which builds upon spirited dialogues among the group members, the most interesting of which is the conversation ...
