| | Labradford E Luxo So CD Labradford Discography of CDs
On their fifth album, Labradford--a band already known for its sparse, dreamy soundscapes--tones things down even further. In approaching a more minimalist aesthetic, Virginia's favorite post-rockers drop the film-noir Ennio Morricone vibe that garnered unnecessary comparisons to Tortoise. Instead, there's a hushed, subtly electronic (it sometimes sounds like Pole's Stefan Betke is sitting in) feel to these six lengthy, untitled tracks that makes its predecessor, MI MEDIA NARANJA, sound like NEVER MIND THE BOLLOCKS. The increased use of space serves the band well, drawing the listener's attention to the sonic minutiae so vital to the band's compositions. Rather than a reduction, this process can be seen as a successful redefinition, especially on the third track, where the gentle pairing of piano with string section evokes a classical feel.
Recording information: Sound Of Music, Richmond, VA.
Personnel: Peter Neff (dulcimer); Chris Johnston, Jamie Evans (strings).
Audio Mixer: John Morand.
Magnet (8-9/99, pp.79-80) - "...If [E LUXO SO] evokes a drug, it would have to be Lithium. The instrumental album compresses the emotional spectrum, trimming all highs and lows to create a semi-dazed mood of muted sadness..." The Wire (5/99, p.54) - "...Masters at conveying desolation and solitude, their work is meditative yet somehow debilitating, what with their spartan pianowork and restrained string sweeps, echo-facing into muggy silences..." CMJ (5/17/99, p.26) - "...quietly woven ribbons of guitar, keyboards, electronic beats and samples. Though the beautiful sonic landscape seems simplistic on the surface, a wealth of textures and nuances will keep patient listeners riveted." Melody Maker (6/19/99, p.52) - 4 1/2 stars out of 5 - "...Minilmalism is a tricky trick to pull off, but Labradford have done it. E LUXO SO is a beautifully sad record....Style, grandeur and beauty in a box....Of its kind, this is the perfect record..." Mojo (Publisher) (7/99, p.112) - "...slow-motion beauty...woven from repeated guitar and neo-classical piano motifs....more or less proving once again that less is more." E Luxo So album
$14.75 "We are trapped in the belly of this horrible machine, and the machine is bleeding to death." Few albums begin with such promise and foreboding, but this first full-length from Canadian genius collective Godspeed You Black Emperor! succeeds in the first few moments. F# A# (Infinity) contains three compositions that run the gamut from grotesque to sublime. The term "composition" seems an appropriate one to use as this band does not write songs. Each piece is at least 14 minutes in length, consisting of three to four sections. The band, a nine-member unit consisting of guitar, drums, bass, strings, keyboard, marimbas, and woodwinds, intersperses voice-over narrative with sprawling instrumental melodies. The arrangements move slowly, building from hushed silence to cathartic crescendo and back again. The narratives ...

| | King Crimson Beat: 30th Anniversary Edition CD (1982) (Import)
E Luxo So album
$16.55 After spending the second half of the '70s on various solo projects, the irrepressible Robert Fripp decided to reinvent King Crimson. Instead of building on the group's '70s legacy, Fripp burned his bridges and started from scratch, even though KC drummer Bill Bruford returned to the fold for the '80s version of the band. The new Crimson was influenced equally by funk, world music, Balinese Gamelan orchestras, minimalism and the new pan-cultural sounds being made by the likes of Talking Heads and Peter Gabriel (in retrospect, the former's REMAIN IN LIGHT, which featured future Crimson guitarist/vocalist Adrian Belew, seems an undeniable influence).
While the repetitive Gamelan-like patterns of DISCIPLINE were still present on BEAT, things loosened up considerably. The title refers at least partially to the Beat era writers referenced in the opening "Neal and Jack and Me," and the freewheeling Beat aesthetic informs much of the music here. From the crazed "Neurotica" to the ominous "Requiem," there's a greater quotient of improvisational fireworks here. Simultaneously, there's further development of the Belew-spearheaded pop sensibilities introduced on DISCIPLINE. "Heartbeat" in particular is perhaps the finest pop tune ...
| | Inner City Soul Makin Change CD (2004)
E Luxo So CD music
$12.69 This seven piece ensemble creatively manages to fuse Latin rhythms with a tasteful mixture of Hip-Hop sound and style. Inner City Soul dove into their musical journey purely out of love, passion, and the overwhelming desire to create music. Not confined to any genre in particular, Inner City Soul is able to blend the various styles of Latin, Funk, Rock, and Hip-Hop all together. Singing songs that reflect the times and environment in which they exist, the music of Inner City Soul speaks to people of all ages, color, and musical preference. Inner City Soul is equipped with a three piece horn section that blows with Hip-Hop precision and a jazz legend's technique. They are supported by a rhythm section trained to play anything from straight ahead salsa to funk-a-fied Hip-Hop beats reminiscent of afros and bellbottoms. This is all held together with an emcee/lyricist known for his mastery freestyle and stage presence like that of a conductor possessed by a break dancing b-boy. Born from the depths of the inner city streets, Inner City Soul-then known as East LA Sabor Factory--was formed in 1998 while the musicians of ICS were still attending high school. From high school talent shows to back yard barbeques to local community benefits, Inner City Soul began to make their mark on the city and community that brought them together. Inner City Soul released a four song, self titled and self produced EP while still attending high school. This fresh new sound had an impact from the moment the group hit the scene. The band's live shows started to create a buzz in the local circuit and they quickly became well known for their overwhelming energy and ability to move crowds of all ages. News of their recording began to spread like wild fire and within two weeks ...
