| | James Chance Lost Chance CD James Chance Discography of CDs
James Chance & The Contortions: James Chance (vocals, alto saxophone, organ); Jerry Agony, Chris Cunningham (guitar); Colin Wade (bass); Rolphe Rolle (drums); Cherie Marilyn (background vocals).
Recorded live at The Misfits Nightclub, Chicago, Illinois in September 1981.
The real question about James Chance's sound is not how he thought of it, but why no one thought of it before. The prime architect of downtown NYC punk-funk, Chance (also known as James White), applied the skewed aesthetic of the burgeoning New York art-punk/new wave scene to the syncopated rhythms of artists like James Brown. From his carefully crafted hairdo to his vocal exhortations, Chance is like a funhouse-mirror image of Brown.
On this representative 1981 live recording, Chance works his exquisitely anguished yelp over funky vamps just off-kilter enough to let you know that LOST CHANCE is more CBGB's than JB's. Adding to the willful dementia is the avant-garde edge provided by Chance's sax and organ work, informed more by free jazz than funk. Chance takes on the Brown legacy head-first on the latter's "I Got You (I Feel Good)," and his manic, punky energy is a surprisingly workable replacement for the Godfather of Soul's funky mastery.
Personnel: James Chance (vocals, alto saxophone, organ); Cherie Marilyn (vocals, background vocals); Chris Cunningham, Jerry Agony (guitar); Ralph Rolle (drums).
Recording information: Misfits Night Club, Chicago, IL (09/1981).

$11.39 James Chance & The Contortions: James Chance (vocals, alto saxophone); Joe Bowie (vocals, trombone); Bern Nix, Tomas Doncker (guitar); Colin Wade (bass); Richard Harrison (drums); The Discolitas (background vocals).
Recorded live at 80's Club and Peppermint Lounge in 1980 and 1981. Includes liner notes by Glenn O'Brien.
Originally released as a ROIR cassette-only, these brutal, yet danceable, live tracks were recorded in New York at the Peppermint Lounge and the '80s Club in 1980 and '81. James Chance and the Contortions mixed punk, free jazz, and funk that has yet to be matched, epitomizing the seedy underbelly of the New York no wave scene of the period. Unlike certain Lydia Lunch performance art projects of the time, Chance provides a timeless attack by combining screeching alto sax and vocal rants with a relentless disco beat. Ornette Coleman and Ronald Shannon Jackson ...
| | Marc Ribot Y Los Cubanos Postizos CD (1998)
Lost Chance
$9.29 All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology.
Guitarist Marc Ribot is well-known and respected for his session work with the likes of Tom Waits and Elvis Costello, as well as his association with John Zorn and other downtown New York experimental musicians. Like several others in that scene, Ribot has formed a group to create an outlet for an interest in ethnic music, in this case, the music of the late Cuban composer, instrumentalist, and bandleader Arsenio Rodriguez, who wrote most of the tunes on this CD. The result is a well-crafted album that should bring Cuban music to a whole new audience.
The album's overall feel is understated--on many cuts it's just Ribot, a bassist, a drummer, and a percussionist. Ribot's guitar solos are always highly articulate ...

| | Critters Buggin Bumpa CD (1998)
Lost Chance
$12.75 To be "buggin' out" is to be visibly obsessing and prone to exaggerated emotional displays. That is, when someone is "buggin' out," it is as if their eyes are about to "bug out" of their heads. Critters Buggin' freely "bug out" over a simple idea on this album of heavy rock-based electronica. The lineup of Critters is an impressive roster of traveled and experienced musicians that have, at various times, been part of Pearl Jam, John Doe's band, Spin ...
