BAD BRAINS was originally released on cassette. It was issued on CD for the first time in 1996.
The Bad Brains were one of the most important voices of the East Coast hardcore scene during its halcyon days of the '80s. What they brought to the scene was nothing short of revolutionary--infusing the form's rage with the spiritual conviction of the Rasta tradition and the instrumental prowess of seasoned jazz players, they breathed new life into a genre in danger of stagnation, or worse, homogenization. Their album on the initially cassette-only ROIR label arrived like a new day, brimming with positivity and spirituality, as well as an unarguable mastery of the musical form of hardcore.
From the album's opening strains on "Sailin' On," the book was re-written, or at least opened a little wider. Vocalist H.R., one of punk's speediest singers, growls and screams his message like a man possessed. On the band's most recognizable classic, "Pay To Cum," his staccato delivery truly reaches breakneck speed, barely decipherable, the song is a torrent of sound, a hurtling juggernaut of boundless energy. He extols the praises of having the right mindset most effectively in "Attitude," a testament to the power of positivity. The band reaches deep into its Rasta roots on "Jah Calling" and "I Love I Jah," rounding out the ever-widening, ever-intense world of BAD BRAINS.
Recorded at 171-A Studios, New York, New York between May and October 1981. Includes liner notes by Ira Kaplan.

A throwbacks view! As a person who had to look for his music wants in the "import section" back in the mid 80's , I'm happy to find the music that I still like , no love to listen to in a mainstream market. Keep up the good work at finding the hard to find "Hard rock" and "Metel" band albums. Submitted by a reviewer (The center of the world NEW YORK , USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

good, fast hardcore/reggae The bad brains (with the exceptions of black flag and some motorhead) are basically responsible for the hardcore movement. They manage to mix twangy, relaxing reggae with loud blitzspeed hardcore punk, and give you an album you'll never forget. If you like peter tosh and/or minor threat, i suggest you immedeatly buy this album. Great mosh and slam dancing music. 5 out of 5 stars ALL THE WAY!!!!!! You won't ever hear anything like it Only a few bands can claim the kind of importance Bad Brains hold. Like The Ramones before them, Bad Brains solidified and defined the sound of an entire wave of punk. Bad Brains created the speed, fury, and intensity of the American hardcore movement of the early eighties almost single-handedly. Bad Brains’ influence and importance is immeasurable and stretches from D.C. to New York to San Francisco to L.A., and can be seen in artists ranging from just about everything that has ever happened in hardcore and punk since, to Mos Def and the Beastie Boys, to Living Color and Fishbone and The Red Hot Chilli Peppers. Bad Brains’ self titled release is responsible for igniting the sound that became hardcore and deserve special attention as one of America’s most important bands ever despite the fact most people have never heard of them. Bad Brains album
$9.49 This 1991 reissue of ROCK FOR LIGHT contains three tracks that weren't on the original LP.
Digitally remastered by George Marino (Sterling Sound, New York, New York).
In the early-'80s, the Bad Brains recorded many of the same songs at several different sessions, resulting in such releases as 1982's BAD BRAINS and ROCK FOR LIGHT, 1996's BLACK DOTS, and 1997's OMEGA SESSIONS. ROCK FOR LIGHT is made up of songs produced by Cars leader Ric Ocasek, but unlike the sound of his slick, chart-topping new-wave band, Ocasek wisely kept the production on ROCK FOR LIGHT raw and in-your-face. While such hardcore classics as "Attitude," "Right Brigade," "Banned in D.C.," "Supertouch," "I," "Coptic Times," "Sailin' On," and "At the Movies" would be included as different versions on the aforementioned collections, ROCK FOR LIGHT features rare studio takes of such favorites as "I and I Survive," "The ...
| | Minor Threat Complete Discography CD (1988)
Bad Brains CD music
$10.65 The Washington, D.C. straightedge hardcore punk scene began with Minor Threat. The band recorded two LPs on its own Dischord label, plus an EP and the miscellaneous singles that are collected on this CD. Many of the early recordings on this collection seethe with teen-age angst and indignation. The songs rage against bullies, religious hypocrisy, and the herd mentality.
Other songs, taken from later in Minor Threat's career, feature tighter and more sophisticated playing. Metallic flourishes tinge the guitar work, vocal harmonies abound, and song dynamics vary more than on the earlier record. On certain songs, Ian MacKaye's lyrics address the complexities of friendship, loyalty, and self-expression. "Look Back and Laugh," "Little Friend," and "It Follows" all incline more toward introspection and ambiguity; conveying loss and sadness in addition to outrage. This second set of songs seems to especially anticipate MacKaye's later work with Fugazi. The album also contains a few playful numbers like the sing-along cover of "Stepping Stone," and "Cashing In," a mocking dig at greedy musicians. Minor Threat believed completely in the power of its music, helping earn a loyal fan following and the respect of numerous other bands who emulated ...
| | Black Flag Damaged CD (1981)
Bad Brains music CDs
$13.79 Perhaps the quintessential California punk band, and one of the founding fathers of hardcore, Black Flag is to America what the Sex Pistols are to the U.K. DAMAGED is the band's most loved album, featuring some of its best-known songs. Though the group's speedy, full-frontal assault laid the groundwork for the faster-and-louder generation of punks to come, the guitar interplay of Greg Ginn and Dez Cadena is still melodic, and often even hook-filled.
The songs, delivered in an impassioned rant by a young Henry Rollins, are classic Cal-punk, mocking American complacency ("Six Pack," "TV Party") with a winning combination of anger and satire, as well as an ingratiating sense of structure. Also included on the disc is the early, pre-Rollins EP JEALOUS AGAIN, on ...
| | Bad Brains I Against I CD (1986)
Bad Brains songs
$12.39 Some people just don't 'get' Bad Brains. To be fair, their early recordings can be intimidating, and it is only when you familiarize yourself with the musical dialectics of tracks such as 'Pay To Cum' that you can really appreciate their kinetic aesthetic. Abandoning the speed-freak punk cum dub reggae crossover of old, Bad Brains now employed funk and conventional rock stylings. What they lost in 'edge' they more than compensated for in power, allowing temperamental vocalist H.R. to make the most of his famously elastic vocal range over the album's 31 minutes. The exception ...
| | VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD (2002)
Bad Brains album
$6.19 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."
Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling Stone Ron Wood also turns up on what sounds dangerously close to a lounge version of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing," but this minor faux pas is redeemed by the Irish folk medley "Joy of Life/Trout in the Bath" which arguably features more full-on Irishness than the Dublin production of RIVERDANCE. There's also a lovely rendition of Neil Young's "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" that's topped only by Ron Wood's reappearance on a finale of the Stones' "Ruby Tuesday." ...
| | Arcade Fire Funeral CD (2004)
Bad Brains CD music
$11.89 This Montreal ensemble's fiery debut is marked by surging guitars, soulful strings, driving drums, brilliant bass lines, and the quavering vocals of married couple Win Butler and Regine Chassagne. The group's song structures careen through a vast territory of musical and personal history, with lyrics warm with memories of childhood neighborhoods and deceased loved ones, resulting in an alternating current of joy and sadness.
Favorably compared to the Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, and Broken Social Scene, the Arcade Fire's sound seems to come from a lifetime of listening to the Cure, Talking Heads, Elvis Costello, and many others--even a dose of soul gets worked into these grand anthems. Chassagne delivers some spellbinding vocals on "Haiti," while the tinkling piano and strings on "Crown of Love" conjure up a heartbroken surfside prom. In 2004, this made many critics' year-end lists, and it's no wonder--the songs on FUNERAL are so packed with unique instrumentation, mesmerizing build-ups, and galvanizing tempo changes that they seem culled from some enigmatic, decade-spanning rock anthology.

| | Lucky Dube Way It Is CD (1999)
Bad Brains music CDs
$14.45 Lucky Dube is widely considered to be Africa's "King of Reggae" and The Way It Is brilliantly continues his reign. Brandishing one of the most haunting voices in modern reggae, Dube tackles social and political issues with the style and sincerity of Bob Marley, coupled with the ferocity of his biggest influence, Peter Tosh. Opening with melancholy vocals on the sublime "Crying Game," capturing a touch of his South African Mbaqanga roots on "Let the Band Play On," and dabbling in a little classical chamber music for "Till You Lose It All," the singer manages to deliver hardcore roots reggae with a fresh perspective. This album showcases reggae at its best by one of the best. ~ Rosalind Cummings-Yeates

| | Sly & Robbie Friends CD (1998)
Bad Brains songs
$11.39 FRIENDS is an exceptional new reggae offering by this soulful pair, who, as bassist and drummer, put the "riddim" into the rhythm section. As producers and composers, the tunes and tones they use aren't only of the Kingston kind, however. Lionel Richie and El DeBarge classics sit on the bench with a steamy rendition of Cole Porter's "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To," nodding across the way to the Stones' "Satisfaction." Yep, it's all true. And somehow, the stitches don't show.
Sly and Robbie have combined crooning vocals (courtesy of some high-powered guests), punchy horns, and rootsy keyboard work with a healthy amount of wit. Sly & Robbie utilize their friends' talents well; Maxi Priest's earnest touch makes "Only a Smile" that much sweeter. Jah Wobble's remix of "Nightnurse" is undoubtedly the trippier of the two renditions on this album. FRIENDS is the meeting place where the old and new and the sultry and goofy all spend their after hours.
FRIENDS won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album.

| | Junior Reid Boom Shack A Lack CD (2002) (Import) United Kingdom
Bad Brains album
$10.99 Boom Shack-a-Lack (originally released in 1985 and reissued in 2002 with two bonus tracks) finds the young Junior Reid coming into his own as a mature vocalist, in the last stages of developing the style that would serve him well later as a member of Black Uhuru. It also finds producer Prince Jammy and the Hi Times Band at the peak of their powers, generating powerful no-frills dancehall grooves that give Reid both room to maneuver and plenty of structural solidity. Those shared strengths all come together most powerfully on "Big Timer," with its spare instrumentation and subtly dubwise mix, while "Drink Me out Royalty" unfortunately ...
