La Caccia
$15.17 A live performance available as either a BluRay or a DVD/CD set, Live in Barcelona captures Il Divo's April 3, 2009, performance at Palau Sant Jordi. The video portions contain the complete 24-track performance; the CD is a truncated ten-cut sampler, designed as a bonus rather than the main attraction. That main attraction is the extravaganza captured on video, where the operatic quartet runs through all manners of pop standards -- "Bridge Over Troubled Water," "Unbreak My Heart," "Nights in White Satin," "The Winner Takes It All," "My Way," "The Impossible Dream" -- sometimes translating the lyrics out of English so they feel more like opera. Naturally, this live set won't convince doubters, but those who have loved any of the group's five studio albums will find this a satisfying spectacle.

La Caccia
$8.19 This third release from the Quebec-based Carrier trio explores the rich vein of possibilities first tapped as hard bop came of age in the 1960s and began to move towards a freer conception. With passionate, uncompromising musicianship, Carrier and company probe these seams between bop structures and the avant-garde to discover fresh improvisational terrain.Carrier's playing evokes the snaking, vocal quality of Eric Dolphy, the idiosyncratic logic of Ornette Coleman, and the acerbic, outward bound post-bop of Jackie McLean, in a style that focuses on the sound, not on gratuitous, note-filled flurries. In drummer Michel Lambert and bassist Pierre Côté, Carrier has ideal allies. The supple, staccato rhythms of Billy Higgins, the pulse and intensity of Elvin Jones, and the driving cymbal work of Tony Williams all find personal expression in Lambert's committed playing. Côté, a monstrous talent, is in audible communion with his instrument -- its wood, the finish, the strings, the flesh of his hands, and his glorious tone propelling the others to riskier terrain, supporting them and, then, guiding them back. The questing musical spirit evident here has roots in the high-energy and advanced interplay of the Elvin Jones/Jimmy Garrison/Joe Farrell power trio heard on Jones' Blue Note recordings The Ultimate and Puttin' it Together. When pianist Steve Amirault joins in, as he does seamlessly for explorations on three tracks, the most obvious reference point is the John Coltrane quartet of the Impulse years, especially on the title track, which calls to mind "Spiritual" from Live at the Village Vanguard. This is music that deserves to be heard by anyone who enjoys the open-ended possibilities -- far from exhausted -- of the '60s-era Blue Note and Impulse releases that embraced the avant-garde, but still kept one foot planted in a more structured discipline. ~ Jim Todd

$11.15 | | Barry Schrader Beyond CD (2005)
La Caccia
$12.09 On Beyond, composer Barry Schrader presented lengthy pieces of electro-acoustic music written between 1992 and 2004, three of them grouped into a 2004 suite titled "Death." Diverse instrumentation, including waterphones, harpsichord, violin, and computer-treated samples, were used to create celestial soundscapes evoking endless space and muted oceanic waves. While there's an immersed-in-a-black-hole feel to much of the material, trace elements of sound enable the tone to steer clear of utter emptiness, as if vibrations are bouncing off objects that serve as reminders that we're not wholly alone. That's most true of the pieces comprising "Death," but that's not Schrader's sole mood, as "First Spring" creates tinkling, shimmering rows of volleying notes with a hint of melancholy mysticism. One would be hard-pressed to call any of this cave-dwelling ambience jaunty, but some mild levity is supplied by "Duke's Tune," based on a more or less random "tune" "composed" on the xylophone by "Duke" -- not Duke Ellington, but an actual pig, pictured playing the xylophone in the CD booklet. ~ Richie Unterberger
