$15.39 | | Eagles Desperado CD (1973)
Capricorn-The Samuel Barber Collection
$15.65 "Twenty-one" is Flying Burrito Brothers-style country-rock, "Out of Control" is amped-up blues-rock, whereas the title track is a plaintive, melancholic piano ballad (abetted by a string section). Don Henley plays a bigger part on DESPERADO, lending vocals and co-writing much of the material, including the opener "Doolin Dalton" and the lazy, beautiful "Tequila Sunrise," the record's single. The Eagles' sophomore album showed them developing their signature style, and achieving the radio-friendly sheen they would refine over the next two albums, then perfect on 1976's HOTEL CALIFORNIA.
The Eagles' excellent debut indicated that they were quickly on their way to becoming one of America's leading country-rock acts. DESPERADO, their second release, ostensibly a concept album about an outlaw figure of the Old West, furthered their claim. Recorded in London under the aegis of Glyn Johns, the set was marked by the quartet's highly measured playing, distinctive, high-flown harmonies, and accessible folk and country-flavored pop-rock. DEPERADO may not be as cohesive as its predecessor, but the different styles it encompasses mirror the Eagles' many strengths.
Eagles: Bernie Leadon (vocals, guitar, banjo, mandolin); Glenn Frey (vocals, guitar, piano); Randy Meisner (vocals, bass instrument); Don Henley (vocals, drums).
| | Eric Johnson Tones CD (1986)
Capricorn-The Samuel Barber Collection
$12.79 Tones, Eric Johnson's first solo album, is an exceptionally strong debut, and a record that is just as good as the guitarist's breakthrough 1990 release Ah Via Musicom. Grouped with long-time compatriots Roscoe Beck and Tommy Taylor, Johnson's trademark composing voice and so-sweet electric guitar are already on full display. True to the album's title, Johnson showcases many different guitar tones, from the violin-like sustain of his trademark distortion to the bell-like timbre of his clean-toned rhythm work. Johnson also sings on five of the nine songs on Tones, and his voice is as competently expressive as ever. The second half of this record is really where it moves from being simply "good" to "great." Emerging from Stephen Barber's almost new-agey Fairlight CMI vamp, "Trail of Tears" kicks into a driving groove punctuated by Johnson's chordal stabs and arpeggios and carried by one of the guitarist's best vocal melodies. The multi-tiered arrangement is also one of the high marks of Johnson's catalog. This track segues in turn into the wonderful "Bristol Shore." This song features Johnson making his guitar sound like a koto as well as throwing in some impossibly in-tune upper-register licks that are played so sweetly they seem to threaten to fly off into the stratosphere (pun intended). The lack of a "Cliffs of Dover," a catchy, driving instrumental showcase for Johnson's chops, does not cheapen Tones in any way. It is a beautiful and important album by one of the greatest electric guitarists ever to pick up the instrument. ~ Daniel Gioffre
Debut album features 9 tracks written or co-written by Johnson, including the blistering instrumentals 'Victory', 'Zap', 'Desert Song' and 'Soulful Terrain'.
| | Bonnie Raitt Luck Of The Draw CD (1991)
Capricorn-The Samuel Barber Collection
$11.69 An extremely strong follow-up to the superb NICK OF TIME, LUCK OF THE DRAW continues where that Grammy winner left off--and in a way, surpasses it. Co-produced by Raitt and Don Was, LUCK OF THE DRAW again plays on the singer's rich blues roots and potent slide guitar, with a fair share of the softer, lovelorn ballads that distinguished NICK OF TIME. A gutsy woman who revels in her sexuality, Raitt shapes "Something to Talk About" and the reggae-tinged "Come To Me" into brilliant come-ons, then counters the seduction hauntingly with songs like the heartbreaking "I Can't Make You Love Me," featuring Bruce Hornsby on piano.
The complicated emotional reverie of "One Part Be My Lover" emerged from a poem that Raitt's husband Michael O'Keefe left on her pillow after the couple had argued one night. "Not the Only One" is a beautiful, buoyant love song with Raitt's sand-and-smoke vocals riding Paul Brady's lyrics with reverent, hopeful abandon. Further establishing the fiery redhead as the grand blues mama (not to mention one of the most formidable slide guitarists) of the contemporary rock scene, LUCK OF THE DRAW is Raitt at her raunchy and romantic best.

| | John Legend Once Again CD (2006)
Capricorn-The Samuel Barber Collection
$9.59 If John Legend hadn't made his name working with Kanye West, producing Jay-Z, and playing on Lauryn Hill's classic THE MISEDUCATION OF LAURYN HILL, his 2004 studio debut GET LIFTED would have still established him as a true frontrunner in the world of R&B. His studio follow-up, 2006's ONCE AGAIN, is better than its predecessor; the music is still steeped in vintage 1960s- and '70s-flavored R&B, but Legend's songcraft, productions, and nuanced singing are even more appealing.
Most impressively (especially for someone who swapped his birth name for "Legend"), the music is remarkably understated, subtle, and textured. The cool-toned groove of the album's lead-off single, "Save Room," is a case in point, as is the beautiful, mid-tempo "Show Me," which floats on intricate electric guitar patterns and swelling strings. The vibe is deep on ONCE AGAIN, and beautifully restrained; the productions are contemporary and tinged with hip-hop aesthetic, yet they're never overbearing. Horns, piano, tasteful strings, and a pulsing rhythm section provide a sweet canvas for Legend's seductive croon and falsetto swoops. ONCE AGAIN is a true soul record, and Legend is rapidly gaining on his competitors as the king of the neo-soul mountain.
