Strictly The Best, Vol. 7 CD music
$6.89 A South African girl, named Sarafina, lives with her aunt and uncle in Soweto where she attends school. Her mother works as a maid in a white household in Johannesburg, and the two rarely see each other. Sarafina battles her feelings of abandonment and disappointment with passionate hero-worship of both imprisoned political activist Nelson Mandela and her rebellious history teacher, Mary Masombuka. Mary encourages the children to be proud of who they are, and aware of the political forces that rule their lives. She even helps the pupils put on a play expressing their desire for the eventual release of Mandela.
But when one of ...

| | Steel Pulse State Of Emergency CD (1988)
Strictly The Best, Vol. 7 songs
$2.81 The synth-happy production on State of Emergency overwhelms the songs at times, but there are some standouts, such as the guitar leads in "Steal a Kiss," and the melody and rhythms of "Said You Was Angel." ~ Victor W. Valdivia
If earlier Steel Pulse albums occasionally suffered from slick production and superfluous synthesizer parts, at least the band's lyrical gifts and songwriting talents overcame those flaws. Unfortunately, on State of Emergency, the production completely overwhelms the songs, which are, sad to say, not that strong in the first place. Every song here is covered with layer upon layer of shrill, tinny synthesizers, all of which sound painfully corny and dated. Adding insult to injury, the lyrics and music are poorly conceived and clumsily developed. The gist of "Hijacking," apparently, is that hijackings are bad, while "P.U.S.H." salutes the Jesse Jackson organization by merely repeating the acronym over and over in between simplistic entreaties to peace. The silly lyrics are ...
| | Sahra Indio Good's Gonna Happen CD (2003)
Strictly The Best, Vol. 7 album
$16.45 The name “Sahra Indio” must be studied first before pronouncing it correctly - “Sah-Ra”. “Sahra”, means “resting place of the people” in Arabic and “Indio” is Spanish for “people” or “Indian” and was given to Sahra by a devotee of Guru Mai in California. Sahra was born in Philadelphia to a musically complex family that included the sweet jazz of now legendary cousin, Clifford Brown who was always fostering other musicians in the family. Sahra’s grandfather insisted that she and her brother play an instrument. Sahra was stubborn and didn’t embrace the Jazz, pop and soul of her family’s home. As Sahra grew into womanhood she left her grandfather’s home and his influences. Fortunately for her fans, the shattering music of Bob Marley and the Wailers sparked a new interest in music for Sahra and she began to explore the musical talent that ran through her blood and could cultivate into something all her own. Sahra would later “catch a fire” on the active volcanic island of Hawaii, re-birthing herself in the Jahringa Reggae Band. “Jahringa” an Australian Aboriginal word for “dreamtime”, was a place where Sahra found her voice to sing about the beauty and the mysteries of life. ...

$13.15 MaShica Winslow is one of Baltimore's greatest singers. At the tender age of twenty-three, she has an accomplished performance track in singing many genres of music. MaShica was raised in a loving Christian family by grandmother, Vashti Hunt, and her thirteen-year old mother, Baltimore gospel legend Sherry Hunt. Sherry discovered MaShica's talent at the early age of three when she began matching pitches that her mother sang to her.MaShica grew up in Edmonson Village, West Baltimore, and attended the Baltimore School for the Arts. Much of her training there was directed toward classical voice, but in her spare time she would listen to gospel and R&B music. In 2001, she graduated from Morgan State University with a degree in classical music performance. While at Morgan, MaShica served as a section leader and featured soloist on selections with varying degrees of difficulty and stylistic approach. The Morgan ...

| | Nelly Furtado Whoa, Nelly CDs (2000) Remastered; Special Edition
Strictly The Best, Vol. 7 CD music
$14.29 On WHOA NELLY, young songstress Nelly Furtado defies expectations by mixing and matching styles and approaches. The overriding production aesthetic includes R&B/hip-hop loops, beats, and samples mated with pure pop touches and some quirky electronic swoops and lurches. Furtado's songs combine hip-hop attitude with occasional Latin rhythmic accents, but the most striking aspect of this recording is the lyrics.
While it wouldn't be difficult to imagine these arrangements being completely ...
