Compilation producers: David Sanguinetti, Howard Chung, Karl Miller, Paul Shields. Reggae Gold includes a wealth of prime dancehall material, including Mega Banton's "Sound Boy Killing," Capleton's "Everybody," Garnett Silk's "Hello Africa" and Cutty Ranks' "Limb by Limb." ~ Keith Farley REGGAE GOLD, a lengthy, 16-track compilation widely advertised on television at the time of its 1993 release, is a fine sampler of early '90s reggae. By the time-period covered on this disc, reggae had moved away from the experimental tendencies of the '70s and early '80s into a position similar to that occupied by its precursor, rock steady, in the late '60s. Early '90s reggae was a smooth and unabashedly commercial music, heavily influenced by contemporary North American and British R&B but with a Caribbean twist. REGGAE GOLD, which features such massive hits as Maxi Priest's "Dreaming," Pam Hall's "I Will Always Love You," and the rap-influenced toasting of Buju Banton in "Wickie Dickie," his duet with the sultry "Nadine Sutherland, exemplifies this strain of reggae. Like the RAS label out of Washington, D.C., VP Records has found success as a stateside label specializing in modern dancehall reggae. Whereas RAS focuses on more roots-minded vocal and DJ cuts, VP keeps attuned almost exclusively to the digital ragga sounds that came to the fore during the '90s. The label certainly has one of the most impressive rosters in this respect, including the likes of Buju Banton, Beenie Man, General Degree, Lady Saw, Beres Hammond, and Bounty Killer, among many others. This fourth installment in VP's high-profile Reggae Gold series offers up prime cuts from all these singers and DJs, along with some updated roots-ragga from Luciano as well as a fine Gregory Isaacs and Lady Saw duet on an update of "Night Nurse." Other standout tracks include Saw's ribald "No Long Talk" (her infamous ...

Audio Mixers: David Kershenbaum; Neill King . Recording information: Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, CA. Unknown Contributor Role: Roger Lian. Imagine that Joe Jackson had a younger brother who grew up listening to the punk and ska music of the late '70s (i.e., the Clash, the Specials), moved to California during the skate punk scene, and formed a band with six of his slacker friends, and you've got a good mental picture of the music on Twenty-Eight Teeth. Buck-O-Nine has the three-minute, get-in-get-out punk/pop aesthetic down to a science, which makes you wonder why they haven't hit it big by now. Surely one well-placed "buzzworthy" clip could have put these guys on the map, except that ska-punk has always been treated as a novelty in this country, and the door was opened just wide enough to let acts like No Doubt and Rancid slip through. Although it's likely little consolation to the band, the lack of commercial success has allowed Buck-O-Nine to stave off maturity, which is a major label's way of sucking the last bit of marrow from a band's vitality. True, Twenty-Eight Teeth is a slight step toward more commercial music for the septet, but the songs move so quickly that you hardly have time to think about it. Winning tunes abound: "Round ...
| | Best Of Beenie Man CD (2000)
Reggae Gold
$12.79 Personnel includes: Beenie Man, Barrington Levy, Lady Saw, Chevette Franklyn, Luciano. Producers include: Dave Kelly, The Shocking Vibes Crew, Hyman Wright, Percy Chin, Tony Kelly. Compilation producer: Cristy Barber. Includes liner notes by Patricia Meschino. Digitally remastered by Joel Chin and Paul Shields (VP Mastering, New York, New York). Personnel includes: Beenie Man, Barrington Levy, Lady Saw, Chevelle Franklyn, Luciano. Producers include: Dave Kelly, The Shocking Vibes Crew, Hyman Wright, Percy Chin, Tony Kelly. Compilation producer: Cristy Barber. Includes liner notes by Patricia Meschino. Digitally remastered by Joel Chin and Paul Shields (VP Mastering, New York, New York). Audio Remixer: Dave Kelly. Liner Note Author: Patricia Meschino. Photographers: Cristy Barber; Allyson Ione. And the best place for new fans to start. This sumptuous collection, 20 songs strong, rounds up a set's worth of crucial hits, and includes a succinct bio within the sleeve notes. The album works roughly backwards chronologically, kicking off with Beenie Man's 1999 smash, "Bookshelf," then winding its way back through time to 1994's clutch of smash hits -- "World Dance," "Modelling," "Crazy Baldhead," "Slam," and its rhythm twin, "Certain Gal." "Murderer" is slightly out of sequence, and dates from the following year. That paired the DJ with the song's originator, Barrington Levy, while "Baldhead," a cover of the Bob Marley classic, had Beenie join forces with Luciano. Other crucial combos include the smoky "Healing" with Lady Saw and the ultimate bashment, "Dancehall Queen," with Chevelle Franklin. Of course, most of these numbers were bundled onto Beenie's own albums, so fans will be shelling out for just a few songs, or the chance to have all their favorites in one place. But there's little argument on the choices -- "Romie," "Oysters & Conch," the original "Girls Dem Sugar," the fabulous "Foundation," and the DJ's international chart-buster, "Who Am I," and the list goes on and on. Beenie did have hits before 1994, and obviously you won't find them here. However, Jet Star's Gold plugged that gap this same year; between the two sets, fans can have an excellent career-spanning collection. ~ Jo-Ann Greene Despite his huge reputation, Beenie Man doesn't distinguish himself that much from the rest of the dancehall reggae pack. That may be because so much of the pack is imitating him -- his popularity has been considerable for the last ten years. But whatever the explanation, 140 minutes of Beenie Man will probably be more than any but the most rabid fans will want in a single sitting. There are some magical moments on this 40-track set: "Let Him Go" has a great hook and an irresistible rhythm, as does "World Gone Bad." There ...
| | Tony Bennett At Carnegie Hall: Recorded Live June 9, 1962 -- The Complete Concert CDs (1962)
Reggae Gold
$15.89 Personnel includes: Tony Bennett (vocals); Ralph Sharon (conductor). Reissue producer: Didier C. Deutsch CARNEGIE HALL recreates the original 1962 performance by adding 18 unreleased songs to the existing 26-song double album. This is part of Columbia Records' Tony Bennett Masters Series. Recorded on June 9, 1962, one week before the release of the I Left My Heart in San Francisco album that would catapult Tony Bennett's career into the stratosphere, this concert album effectively sums up his accomplishments so far. Some of the hits -- "Stranger in Paradise," "Rags to Riches," "Because of You" -- are still on the set list (although drastically rearranged), but clearly he has found his true repertoire in reinventions of older material like "All the Things You Are" (the version here is exquisite) and good choices of new songs -- he champions the team of Cy Coleman and Carolyn Leigh, and introduces "San Francisco," which some in the audience already know. (Released as a single in advance of the San Francisco album, it was in the charts already.) And on the album's original four LP sides, Bennett managed to find time for such experiments as an up-tempo "Ol' Man River" featuring percussionist Candido, a throwback to his innovative Beat of My Heart album. More than his greatest-hits collections of the '50s and early '60s, it gives a broad sense of Bennett's work, and it does so in the format with which he's most comfortable -- live in concert. ~ William Ruhlmann This two-CD set is recorded concert performance at its best. Originally recorded in 1962, Tony Bennett at Carnegie Hall is a testament to Bennett's live vocal ability. Backed by the Ralph Sharon Orchestra, Bennett moves far beyond his standard musical catalogue. Along with standards like "I Left My Heart in San Francisco" and "Just in Time," Bennett reached out to create great medleys such as "(I Like New York in June) How About You/April in Paris," that automatically become his as soon as they are performed. Forty-four tracks altogether, this latest printing of the concert is the first to cover the entire performance. Most remarkable is the clarity of the recording of the concert. If not for the tremendous applause of the audience, you could swear that Bennett had recorded each track in the studio. This is the Tony Bennett album to buy for any Bennett fan or those just introduced to his music. ~ Christopher Fielder This is the complete version of the triumphant 1962 Carnegie Hall concert, recorded on the heels of Tony Bennett's giant hit "I Left My Heart In San Francisco," and previously released as an abridged 2-LP set. Since this is Tony Bennett in his prime, backed by the superb Ralph Sharon Orchestra and featuring contributions from such superior musicians as jazz tenor Al Cohn, vibraphonist Eddie Costa and guitarist Kenny Burrell, the ...
