There are few musicians whose music has indisputably advanced humanity. Reggae figurehead Bob Marley--a songwriter, poet, activist, and visionary--is one of them. The idea that a single-disc collection could represent the depth, breadth, and power of Marley's achievement is far-fetched, but LEGEND makes an excellent attempt. Every single one of its tracks is outstanding, and the artist's different faces--revolutionary ("Get Up Stand Up"), romantic ...

| | Pepper Kona Town CD (2002)
Ragga Pitch album
$12.25 From Blondie to the Police to the Clash, plenty of rockers have been influenced by reggae over the years -- and that isn't counting all the ska-punk bands that emerged in the '80s and '90s. Pepper certainly isn't the first band to blend alternative rock, punk, and reggae, but while the Hawaiian trio's second album, Kona Town, isn't groundbreaking, it is definitely above average -- not to mention quite likable. Although not innovative, Pepper isn't one of those faceless, cookie-cutter ska-punk combos that sets out to emulate the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, but isn't nearly as impressive. Pepper is smart enough to do its own thing, and that means having an attractive sound that could be described as the Police by way of Steel Pulse by way of punk-pop. Overall, the tunes on this Steve Kravac-produced disc are memorable; when accessible tunes like "B.O.O.T" and "The Good Thing" are playing, one cannot help but admire Pepper's sense of melody. This trio doesn't use angst for the sake of angst to grab your attention -- Pepper obviously sees the value of a memorable ...
| | Ub40 Labour Of Love CD (1983)
Ragga Pitch CD music
$8.85 This is UB40's "tribute" album with cover versions of their favorite songs from 1969 through 1972.
Playing reggae and supporting the UK Labour Party during a decade of Thatcherism and racism demonstrated that these chaps had morals and guts. They eventually prospered (good ultimately conquers bad) and they can now look back and taste their achievement. In the UK, UB40 have ...

| | Chris Murray Raw CD (2002)
Ragga Pitch songs
$7.69 Chris Murray's albums are turning into an exercise in frustration. Not because the material isn't great -- in fact, it's amazingly consistent in its very high quality. Murray has an incredible ability to write ska, reggae, and rocksteady songs that sound like they bubbled up from the steaming streets of 1960s Jamaica, and he sings them in a wonderfully rich and confident voice. The problem is that his solo albums have all followed in the lo-fi footsteps of Four-Track Adventures of Venice Shoreline Chris, his solo debut (which consisted entirely of homemade demos recorded on a crappy four-track cassette recorder). This means that Murray's brilliant songs and great voice are all but buried under background noise, tape hiss, and microphone distortion. Raw takes ...
| | Alpha Blondy Elohim CD (1999)
Ragga Pitch album
$15.05 Six years old when it finally reached America, Elohim isn't the great lost Alpha Blondy album as much as it is an exciting collection of tunes with a crummy cover and so-so production. The original Elohim cover displayed Blondy as a righteous, cross-carrying warrior, but ignore the post-concert, shoved-in-the-corner singer here and you're in for an excellent -- sometimes chilling -- set of conscious lyrics with breezy music. Breezy to a fault, actually, since Blondy's Solar System band seems flattened by the thin production most of the time. Compare the version of "Black Samourai" on the live Paris Bercy album to the one included here for proof, or consider how the wicked lyric "We take no prisoners/And we eat the wounded" ...
