Vibe (9/95, p.194) - 5 (out of 5) - "VP distributes most of the biggest singles in the international dancehall market. No surprise, then, that...GOLD...includes up-to-the-second scorchers....well worth its weight..." Reggae Gold 95 Review

$13.05 Like the RAS label out of Washington, D.C., VP Records has found success as a stateside label specializing in modern dancehall reggae. Whereas RAS focuses on more roots-minded vocal and DJ cuts, VP keeps attuned almost exclusively to the digital ragga sounds that came to the fore during the '90s. The label certainly has one of the most impressive rosters in this respect, including the likes of Buju Banton, Beenie Man, General Degree, Lady Saw, Beres Hammond, and Bounty Killer, among many others. This fourth installment in VP's high-profile Reggae Gold series offers up prime cuts from all these singers and DJs, along with some updated roots-ragga from Luciano as well as a fine Gregory Isaacs and Lady Saw duet on an update of "Night Nurse." Other standout tracks include Saw's ribald "No Long Talk" (her infamous vocal gymnastics taking on Diamanda Galas proportions), Bounty Killer's tight bit of robotic funk "Benz & the Bimma," and General Degree's slinky rub-a-dub cut "When I Hold You Tonight." Those in need of more traditional vocalizing can look forward to Beres Hammond's sunny "Love From a Distance" ...

Reggae Gold 95 album
$16.75 Jamaican dancehall veteran Buju Banton has featured duets with a wide array of artists on his albums right from the beginning, and this two-disc 33-track compilation from VP Records collects several of them in one convenient package. There's none of the slackness here that brought Banton his first taste of fame (and controversy), and his remarkable (and critically lauded) conversion to socially conscious material is well in evidence. Buju's gruff-voiced DJ stance has always been stronger than his singing side, and these pairings with the likes of Beres Hammond, Toots Hibbert, Garnett Silk, and Gregory Isaacs play to his strengths, as he leaves the singing to the pros and interjects his powerful raps at key junctures. Among the highlights here (and there are plenty) are the steamrolling groove of "Little More Time" with Hammond, the quirky and cautionary "Ring the Alarm" with Tenor Saw, a heartfelt "I Dare Not Be Ungrateful" with Heptones singer and bassist Leroy Sibbles, and a barn-burning version of "54-46 That's My Number" with Toots Hibbert of the Maytals, a pairing that -- in hindsight -- seems as obvious and natural as the sun and moon. The anthemic "No More Misty Days" with punk-pop group Rancid is ...
| | Ferron Turning Into Beautiful CD (2005)
Reggae Gold 95 CD music
$14.69 With throaty whispers and another pocketful of magical tunes Ferron once again uses her vocal agility, exquisite musical passages, and restrained timing to paint broad brush strokes across the listener's brain. "Goat Path," co-written by associate producer DB. Benedictson, embodies that formula, and at seven and a half minutes, presses the point with a mix of folk/country that is as good as anything this superior songwriter has crafted in the past. In Sly Stone's heyday Epic Records would declare "Two years is not a long time to wait," but it was more like an eternity for fans of the superstar with the long pauses in between the release of the Stand! ...
