When something works, you stick with it. When the REGGAE GOLD compilation proved to be such a huge success, VP records made it an annual staple in their catalogue. Each volume in the series has picked up where the others left off, presenting the hottest acts in reggae at the height of their game. While those more interested in organic-sounding roots reggae might be better served by the sublime EASY STAR compilation, the more pop-crossover-inclined reggae enthusiasts will find REGGAE GOLD to be just their cup of tea. The star power here is undeniable, with Beres Hammond, Buju Banton, Beenie Man and a host of others doing what they do best. If you bought the other REGGAE GOLD collections, you won't be able to bypass this one.

Reggae Gold 1998 CD music
$13.05 Like the RAS label out of Washington, D.C., VP Records has found success as a stateside label specializing in modern dancehall reggae. Whereas RAS focuses on more roots-minded vocal and DJ cuts, VP keeps attuned almost exclusively to the digital ragga sounds that came to the fore during the '90s. The label certainly has one of the most impressive rosters in this respect, including the likes of Buju Banton, Beenie Man, General Degree, Lady Saw, Beres Hammond, and Bounty Killer, among many others. This fourth installment in VP's high-profile Reggae Gold series offers up prime cuts from all these singers and DJs, along with some updated roots-ragga from Luciano as well as a fine Gregory Isaacs and Lady Saw duet on an update of "Night Nurse." Other standout tracks include Saw's ribald "No Long Talk" (her infamous vocal gymnastics taking on Diamanda Galas proportions), Bounty ...

Reggae Gold 1998 music CDs
$14.45 The meeting of studio genius and rodent, overseen by a man in a lab coat, a monarch, and a missionary, Wa-Do-Dem insured the DJ was no one-hit wonder. Eek A Mouse had hooked up with producer Henry "Junjo" Lawes in late 1980 on a pair of singles which barely served notice of what was to come. A re-recording of "Wa-Do-Dem" (originally produced by Linval Thompson), rocketed the DJ to the top of the dancehall rat pack, leading to a string of hits. 1982's Wa-Do-Dem gathered up a clutch of these, with the Greensleeves reissue adding two more cuts from the period. The Roots Radics lay down the kind of deep roots sound that was swiftly becoming Lawes trademark, while Scientist, King Tubby, and Barnabus took their places behind the mixing desk. The result was one of the most astonishing DJ albums of ever recorded. Eek had one of the most distinctive, and oddest, styles of the time, although today, it's a bit difficult to see what all the fuss was about. But that merely proves his impact upon the scene, his innovative "sing-jay" style, a perfect blend of singing and DJ-ing, was so quickly imitated that it ...
