A versatile artist who croons and deejays with equal skill, Shinehead can take any hit and put his silky stamp on it. Praises is a showcase for this talent, as he delves into '70s and '80s pop and R&B classics and transforms them. The opening track, "Never Make a Promise" is a sizzling take onDru Hill's 1997 R&B hit, accented with a killer rhythm by the Roots Radics. It's followed by interpretations of Seals & Crofts '70s classic "Summer Breeze," changed into "Collie Weed" in the essential ode to marijuana, the Whispers' '80s hit, "Olivia," topped with a spicy bass rhythm, and Roberta Flack's "The First Time Ever I Saw You Face," perked up with Shinehead's bongo playing. The covers don't always work, however, as witnessed by lackluster treatment of Heatwave's "Mind Blowing Decisions" and the Beatles "My Love." Ironically, it's the original tunes, "Pay Me" and the politically aware "Their Plan" that shine the most. ~ Rosalind Cummings-Yeates

Praises music CDs
$12.79 Shayne Ward, the 2005 X Factor winner, released his debut single, "That's My Goal," within four days of the show's finale, and that was enough time for sales to easily take it to the Christmas number one spot. Repeating the feat with an album should have been slightly more difficult, although it was virtually certain to do so, following the example of Steve Brookstein, the previous year's winner. And so it proved to be the case, as the debut album, rather unimaginatively titled Shayne Ward, was released in the middle of April 2006 and was number one before the month was out. Having four months to record and polish an album was still no guarantee of quality, however, and Ward delivered an album of ballads in the style of every boy band since the mid-'90s, with songs interchangeable from those on albums by Take That, Boyzone, Westlife, and Blue. Ward was mentored throughout the show and managed ...

Praises songs
$14.65 Close to You is pianist David Hazeltine's fourth Criss Cross release, and judging by the title you would assume this offering contains a sweet Burt Bacharach tune, a few mellow standards, and some gently peppered originals. All that is true but the material is executed with numerous excursions off the beaten path. Close to You was an enormous hit by the Carpenters in 1970. In the hands ...

Praises album
$13.89 The English-as-a-second-language syntax of their album title notwithstanding, edibleRed are a New York-based band with a distinctly downtown sense of rock & roll attitude. The cello is prominently featured in their sound, but for the most part it's one voice woven into a ragged tapestry of corrosive guitars and airtight beats. This is music with a personality, even a pose, but it doesn't think it's hipper than you. Combine that deceptively subtle balancing act with a frontwoman with bright magenta hair and a spectacular voice, and what could go wrong? Unfortunately, plenty can still go wrong if the lyrics ...
