Listeners might never imagine a combination of doo wop and reggae until they listen to this Dobby Dobson CD. He only really combines the two styles on "Baby Make It Soon"; the others are either one or the other. The Bee Gees' "Words," as well as "Mexican Divorce," "Halfway to Paradise," "Loving Pauper," and "Endlessly" are definitely reggae, while "This Is My Story," "Sweet Dreams," "Diamonds & Pearls," and some others owe their soul to doo wop. Then there's "Cry a Little Cry," something Dick Clark would have played on American Bandstand. On some tunes, including Smokey Robinson and Bobby Rogers' "What Love Has Joined Together," he phrases like Smokey, sounding similar but meatier. This is a versatile collection of songs that Dobson executes well; if you like variety, this one's for you. ~ Andrew Hamilton

$14.45 Horror author Anne Rice penned the screenplay for this full-blooded adaptation of her novel, which chronicles the life of 18th-century nobleman Louis (Brad Pitt) after he is bitten by powerful, charismatic vampire Lestat (Tom Cruise). Though enthralled with the undead lifestyle at first, Louis is unable to warm up to killing humans and grows despondent. To comfort Louis, Lestat creates another vampire (Kirsten Dunst in a star-making peformance), a young girl who from then on cannot age. Antonio Banderas appears as Armand, a 400-year-old vampire, and Christian Slater plays the radio producer who interviews ...

$15.25 Ridley Scott (BLADE RUNNER, ALIEN) transports Hollywood to second-century Rome in this rousing historical epic that proudly harkens back to such films as BEN-HUR and SPARTACUS. Russell Crowe plays Maximus, a Roman general who leads the troops in conquering Germania for the empire. When an aging Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris) tells Maximus that he'd like him to rule Rome once he's gone, a classic confrontation ensues between the brave and charming soldier--who wants to return home to his wife, son, and farm--and the jealous and conniving Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix), the emperor's only son, who is thirsty for power. There are few musicians whose music has indisputably advanced humanity. Reggae figurehead Bob Marley--a songwriter, poet, activist, and visionary--is one of them. The idea that a single-disc collection could represent the depth, breadth, and power of Marley's achievement is far-fetched, but LEGEND makes an excellent attempt. Every single one of its tracks is outstanding, and the artist's different faces--revolutionary ("Get Up Stand Up"), romantic ("Is This Love"), devout Rastafarian ("Buffalo Soldier"), and prophet ("One Love/People Get Ready") are equally represented.
In addition to his moving message of love and unity, Marley is a master songwriter, as the timelessness ...

Vintage Series: Dobby Dobson CD music
$11.25 BAD BRAINS was originally released on cassette. It was issued on CD for the first time in 1996.
The Bad Brains were one of the most important voices of the East Coast hardcore scene during its halcyon days of the '80s. What they brought to the scene was nothing short of revolutionary--infusing the form's rage with the spiritual conviction of the Rasta tradition and the instrumental prowess of seasoned jazz players, they breathed new life into a genre in danger of stagnation, or worse, homogenization. Their album on the initially cassette-only ROIR label arrived like a new day, brimming with positivity and spirituality, as well as an unarguable mastery of the musical form of hardcore.
From the album's opening strains on "Sailin' On," the book was re-written, or at least opened a little wider. Vocalist H.R., one ...
