Beautiful People: The Greatest Hits of Melanie gets the nod over the 1990 Rhino compilation The Best of Melanie as the best compilation of the singer's work. Containing 19 tracks where the earlier album contained 18, it could hardly be longer and fit on one CD. The songs have been mastered from their original master tapes for the first time by Robert Fripp (!) and David Singleton, so the sound quality is the best yet. The set contains the original LP version of Melanie's Top Ten hit "Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)," running just over seven minutes, as opposed to the nearly four-minute single edit. Also featured are two recent songs, "Summer of Love II" and "I Will Get Over." That's all on the credit side. On the debit side, it is not in chronological order and the selection leaves off several of Melanie's singles chart entries, notably "Bitter Bad," which made the Top 40 (and is included in the Rhino compilation). Nevertheless, this must be counted as the best Melanie compilation yet, featuring her number-one hit "Brand New Key," as well as standards like "Beautiful People" and "What Have They Done to My Song, Ma?." ~ William Ruhlmann
Compilation producers: Peter Schekeryk, Mike Ragogna.
Spin (12/99, p.229) - 6 out of 10 - "...[Her] jejune ways surface in songs like the strange saloon classic 'What Have They Done To My Song, Ma?' and up-tempo coffeehouse-crowd-pleasers like 'Animal Crackers.' But one of the many odd things about Melanie was how grandly musical she could become..."d Beautiful People: The Greatest Hits Of Melanie Music Beautiful People: The Greatest Hits Of Melanie Songs Beautiful People: The Greatest Hits Of Melanie Music Review Average Rating: (3.7 out of 5 stars) Welcome Back Melanie! Melanie's work has always been scattered across a few different labels since her appearance at the original Woodstock festival which thrust her in the world spotlight. The best of the best are ALL here, finally, and they are wonderful. My personal favorite the (at the time) risky "Psychotherapy," brings back a few giggles and wonderful memories. Enjoy enjoy enjoy...and THIS is the single best, "best of" that you can purchase of this captivating folk hero. Submitted by Richard (Northeast, Pennsylvania) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Misleading The song Candles in the Rain was billed as the original. However the original as on the Buddha label #5040 started with a poem which I have been trying to locate Submitted by lares1 (Jacksonville, Fl. USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
A request, not a review Melanie created some wonderful music, I mostly remember her for the 'Candles in the rain' album which I would love to own on CD. The songs just flow and are timeless. It's like the song list on Abbey road by the beatles, each track follows it's predecessor and is out of place elsewhere. For this reason, I shun 'Greatest hits' albums, OK the songs themselves are great, but, for me, they need to be in the correct order.. This album sold millions, surley the record companies should re-release it.. Submitted by a reviewer (United Kingdom) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 0 of 1 found this helpful.

Beautiful People: The Greatest Hits Of Melanie music CDs
$14.75 Since Ballard & the Midnighters remain most known for their mid-'50s R&B/early rock & roll hits, it has sometimes been overlooked that they actually reached their crossover pop peak in the early '60s. In 1960 and 1961, they had seven Top 40 hits in the pop charts, and two Top Ten hits with "Finger Poppin' Time" and "Let's Go, Let's Go, Let's Go." All of those hits are on this 24-song anthology, which is devoted almost exclusively to Ballard's 1960s output, although a few of the Midnighters' most dance-oriented sides from 1955-1957 sneak in. Ballard's original version of "The Twist," recorded in 1958 (and a Top 30 hit in 1960, although Chubby Checker's cover went to number one), is here, and its success laid the foundation for an endless series of dance records over the next few years. "The Coffee Grind," "The Continental Walk," "The Switch-A-Roo," "It's Twistin' Time," "Good Twistin' Tonight," "Do You Know How to Twist?," even "The Float": all are on board. (And how could one resist calling "The Float" a dance bound to be dead on the water, even if it did make number ten R&B?) Ballard may have been more earthy, more funky, and more authentic in every way than Chubby Checker, but in this era he was really pursuing a similar formula: twist and dance records, the themes recycled ad infinitum. And it must be conceded that the formula, in Ballard's hands, wears out its welcome when the singles are heard bang right after each other. It's competent dance rock bridging 1950s R&B and early soul, without nearly enough variation or innovation to sustain interest. Ballard made modest concessions to modern soul on the handful of 1965-1969 sides that close the disc, even trying to hitch a ride on the James Brown train with 1969's "Butter Your Popcorn." Really, however, "Finger Poppin' Time," "Let's Go, Let's Go, Let's Go," and "The Twist" are all you need to hear from this era, and you can probably find them on various-artists anthologies without breaking too heavy a sweat. ~ Richie Unterberger
