Although it isn't as strong as the group's previous records, The Touch has an appealing sound similar to their earlier records, and enough good moments -- particularly the title track -- to make it worthwhile listening for dedicated fans. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Although it has a couple of worthwhile songs, particularly the title track, The Touch is the weakest record Alabama had put out to date. It follows the same formula as the band's previous records, but given the album's lack of melody or hooks, The Touch is unmemorable. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

On the previous Southern Star, Alabama bounced out of their mid-'80s rut, and their winning streak continued on Pass It On Down. Like any of their albums, there is a fair share of filler, but that's outweighed by the best songs on the record, particularly the hit "Down Home." ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Recording information: Cook Sound, Ft. Payne, AL; Emerald Sound, Nashville, TN; Masterfonics Studio 6, Nashville, TN; Recording Arts, Nashville, TN. Alabama Cheap Seats CD  (1993)

CD $12.35  Audio Samples
By the time CHEAP SEATS was released, Alabama was in decline. The new wave of country artists such as Garth Brooks and Clint Black was taking over the airwaves, and Randy Owens and the boys were on the wane. However, this 1993 release stands up the musical standards of Alabama's previous work; its merging of C&W, gospel and pop-rock is just as consistent and clever as ever. In general, CHEAP SEATS mixes Southern-fried rock tunes such as "Still Goin' Strong" and the title track "The Cheap Seats," with delicate ballads including the sorrowful "Katy Brought My Guitar Back Today" and the introspective "That Feeling." As usual, themes of American pride, the plight of the archetypal rural man, love, and love's loss, weave their way through this CD's 11 tracks. A valiant effort, CHEAP SEATS is a commendable swan song. Recorded at Emerald Sound, Nashville, Tennessee and Cook Sound, Fort Payne, Producers: Larry Michael Lee, Alabama, Teddy Gentry, Josh Leo. Engineers include: Jeff Geidt, Ed Turner, Timothy Dobson. Personnel: Jeff Cook (vocals, guitar, fiddle); Theodore Gentry (vocals, bass guitar); Mark Herndon (vocals, drums, percussion); Randy Owen (vocals); John Willis (guitar, electric guitar, sitar); Josh Leo (guitar, electric guitar); Bernie Leadon (guitar, banjo); Mark Casstevens, Biff Watson (guitar); Dann Huff, George ...

Arguably the 800-pound gorilla of country prior to the arrival of Garth Brooks and Travis Tritt in the early '90s, Alabama blends Southern rock and radio-friendly pop with traditional country and bluegrass. The group's sophomore release FEELS SO RIGHT is typical of the period in country music when smooth, slick production was beginning to take hold. A streamlined, pop inflected album, FEELS SO RIGHT is full of hook laden, lyrically unswerving songs about love and heartache. This is Alabama at its best. Recorded at The Music Mill, Nashville, Tennessee. Producers: Alabama, Larry McBride, Harold Shedd. Engineers: Harold Shedd, Gene Rice, Jim Cotton. Personnel: Jeff ...

Recorded during the peak years of Alabama's career, THE CLOSER YOU GET combines pop-rock with country in a very distinctive, always catchy manner. Listening today to this mix of genres, one realizes how truly original and groundbreaking this music once was; with THE CLOSER YOU GET (and other records from this period), Alabama essentially created a new breed of popular music, one that would give birth to artists such as Garth Brooks and even Shania Twain. Highlights on this CD include "Lady Down on Love," "She Put the Sad in All His Songs" and "What in the Name of Love." These songs revolve around classic themes of love and the lack of it. However, Randy Owens and the boys also perform songs with a stronger rock edge too--examples of this include the title track and the album's closer, "Lovin' Man." Most of the songs on this record, however, are delicate and lush. Replete with many fine ballads and mellow country originals, THE CLOSER YOU GET helped redefine popular music in the latter ...

Mel Wade Solitude CD  (2009)

Touch CD music

Photographer Ken Rockwell says that "you will never see the work of a true artist unless you know one personally." I happen to know a true artist personally, and I'm taking the liberty of sharing her work. Mel Wade is the sister of one of my best friends, and a friend of mine in her own rite. I first heard her perform as an instrumentalist with a local band, "Shye Violet," in 2001. Since then, I've had the pleasure of hearing her perform in various places as a pianist, guitarist, vocalist, drummer, and composer. Recently, her talent was recognized by someone of influence, and since then she's been refining her music in the studio, planning to release a debut album. I listened this morning to some of the working tracks for the album: Highway Ride, Hole in my Guitar, Escape, Can't Buy Love, The Search, and Solitude (my favorite). Mel has done various styles in the past: I would call the style of this album folk-rock based on the instrumentation, though there's much more there. Her music is guitar-based, and sweetened with banjo, mandolin, fiddle, and haunting vocal harmonies. Most artists tend to overuse those instruments in my opinion, but Mel uses them sparingly, in a way that complements the music rather than overcoming it. Then there are the lyrics. Lyrics tend to take on so many different meanings for different people. I'll leave ...

Round Mountain Windward CD  (2009)

Touch songs
CD $13.79
The term "roots rock" has been used quite loosely over the years -- as just about every band that has a hint of acoustic guitar in its sound seems to fall under the aforementioned stylistic umbrella. But the duo of brothers Char and Robbie Rothschild -- better known as Round Mountain -- is the real deal when it comes to roots rock, especially as evidenced by the pair's third release overall, 2009's Windward. Despite the band being solely comprised of the two brothers, an extraordinary array of exotic and uncommon instruments is utilized -- Irish whistle, gaida, saz, cajon, bouzouki, kora, etc. But it all fits together nicely (as it sounds more "folk music" than "world music"), with Round Mountain's music sounding consistently mellow and laid-back, as evidenced by such tracks as "Don't Lie Down," "In Us All," and "I'm Gone." For roots rock that is entirely free of such expected influences as Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, ...
