| | Perry Como I Believe CD Perry Como Discography of CDs
(2 Customer Reviews)
BMG Special Products' I Believe contains ten gospel and inspirational songs Perry Como recorded at various points in his career. Many of the tracks were recorded under the direction of Mitchell Ayres, and there are several recordings with Ray Charles (not that Ray Charles -- the Ray Charles of the Ray Charles Singers), plus one with the Hugo Winterhalter Orchestra & Chorus. Despite the different arrangers and producers, I Believe sounds cohesive since all of them are coming from the same place -- they all construct lush backgrounds for Perry, and he sings in his trademark smooth-as-honey voice. It's not exceptional Como, but it's not bad, either, and it's ideal for any budget-minded fan looking for a nice inspirational album from the vocalist. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Personnel: Perry Como (vocals).
Directors: Ray Charles; Mitchell Ayres.

| | Tommy Roe Greatest Hits CD (1986)
I Believe songs
$6.45 Tommy Roe's Greatest Hits on Onyx Classix is a ten-track collection that looks fishy right from the get-go. "Crimson & Clover," "Sugar Sugar," and "Baby I Love You" were not hits for Roe, and indeed the whole collection is pretty much a rip-off. The songs are re-recorded versions of Roe's big hits (plus the three songs previously mentioned) done in what sounds like the '80s, going by the sound of the drums and the keyboards. Roe's voice itself still sounds very good and it might have been interesting to hear him revisit "Sheila," "Jam Up and Jelly Tight," and "Dizzy" if the musical backing were sympathetic or even interesting. It isn't, however, and you should give this misleadingly packaged disc a wide berth. (This same material has been repackaged and retitled by other unscrupulous record companies, so be vigilant and read the fine print when buying a budget Roe collection.) ~ Tim Sendra

| | Barry Manilow Live On Broadway CD (1987)
I Believe album
$5.59 In this lavish Broadway spectacle--complete with a big band, backup singers, and a stage show--the irrepressible Barry Manilow gives an overview of his life story in song. He introduces the musical odyssey with "Sweet Life" and "It's A Long Way Up," and listeners are taken from his humble beginnings ("Brooklyn Blues") through his first experiences in the business ("Up Front"). "Mandy" closes this phase of his life (and the first set), the hit single that finally brought him recognition as a songwriter and performer.
The second set touches on his failed marriage ...
| | Definitive Tom Jones 1964-2002 CDs (2003) England; Box Set
I Believe CD music
$90.25 This four-disc retrospective anthology spans nearly 40 years in the career of Welsh singer Toots Thielemans. Over 90 tracks from the years 1964 to 2002 are accompanied by a 64-page booklet containing sleeve notes, photos, and discography.
The Definitive Tom Jones 1964-2002 pretty much fulfills the criteria most fans expect a multi-disc, career-spanning box set to satisfy. The four-CD, 93-track collection includes most of his chart hits -- and all of the big ones, though some minor entries get skipped over -- as well as a load of less familiar album tracks. Diehards might particularly rue the absence of the 1977 Top 20 single "Say You'll Stay Until Tomorrow," his cover of "Resurrection Shuffle" (which charted as a B-side in the U.S. in 1971), and his early single "This and That." Also, the sheer weight of material means that it's not nearly as concentrated in its power as a more concise greatest-hits collection. It becomes less and less interesting as it ventures beyond the early '70s, particularly on the last CD, taken up by a good number of clubby productions and celebrity duets from the 1990s and early 2000s. Still, Jones' remarkable voice remains at peak efficiency even on the fourth disc, something you can say of few other pop singers when they pass the half-century mark. And the collection does document his versatility in a number of genres -- rock & ...

I Believe music CDs
$14.05 Alison Krauss & Union Station: Alison Krauss (vocals, fiddle, viola); Dan Tyminski (vocals, guitar); Ron Block (vocals, guitar, National guitar, banjo); Barry Bales (vocals, electric & acoustic upright basses, arco bass); Adam Steffey (vocals, mandolin, mandola).

Twenty-five-year-old Alison Krauss has singlehandedly revived popular interest in bluegrass, and SO LONG SO WRONG finds her own popularity at a peak: It follows up her 1995 collection NOW THAT I'VE FOUND YOU, which sold an astonishing 2 million copies. SO LONG SO WRONG sticks to the combination of contemporary bluegrass ballads and traditional songs that has ...

| | Raymond Fairchild Plays The Classics CD (2002)
I Believe album
$13.05 When banjoist Raymond Fairchild burst upon the folk revival scene in the early '60s, he was hailed as the real deal. His picking borrowed from Earl Scruggs and others, but he had also carved out a distinct style that combined the three-finger method with single note runs. Plays the Classics was compiled from two albums that Fairchild recorded in the 1980s, Raymond Fairchild Plays Requests and World Champion Banjo. He's joined by guitarist Josh Crowe, bassist Wayne Crowe, and fiddler Arvil Freeman on 13 classics stretching from "Flint Hill Special" to "Under the Double Eagle." It's amazing what Fairchild can do with even a simple piece like "T for Texas," ...
