BMG Special Products Greatest Hits Live: The Encore Collections contains latter-day live recordings from Eddie Money. In other words, it's of marginal interest for anyone other than a hardcore fan -- and even those hardcore fans are likely to admit that these particular versions of "Two Tickets to Paradise," "Baby Hold On," "Wanna Go Back," "Take Me Home Tonight" and "Shakin'" don't capture Money at his best. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Extended Versions album
$6.79 Before David Gilmour virtually "became" Pink Floyd he was always the most likely member of the band (with the possible exception of de-facto leader Roger Waters) to release a solo album. 1978's welcome eponymous debut showcased his multi-faceted performing talents.
The album opener "Mihalis" is an ANIMALS period instrumental, which, along with "Raise My Rent," sounds like an outtake from that album. The beautiful "There's No Way Out of Here" begins with a lonely harmonica and, with "No Way" and "I Can't Breathe Anymore," expounds the album's main theme of being trapped in an untenable situation. "Cry From the Streets" is a nod to the blues, while the lovely "So Far Away" harks back to the ballads of OBSCURED BY ...

| | Doors Soft Parade CD (1969) Gold; Remastered
Extended Versions CD music
$20.29 Dismissed by the benighted as the Doors' "pop album," SOFT PARADE is one of the band's most adventurous recordings, utilizing strings and horns without resorting to schlocky over-production and moving far beyond their blues roots. Morrison was fully into his shaman phase by 1969, and his obsession with that image is reflected in the proselytizing air of "Tell All the People," and of course "Shaman's Blues." The album's biggest hit "Touch Me," while easily the group's most radio-friendly offering, is a pop classic that ranks among the great '60s AM radio tunes. "Wild Child" is a brief return to the blues-rock of yore, but the title track is a sophisticated, extended piece that moves through several different moods and textures, full of the elliptical, poetic lyrics ...
| | O A R Souls Aflame CD (2000)
Extended Versions music CDs
$9.89 O.A.R.'s second release, Souls Aflame, picks up where their debut album, The Wanderer, left off with one major difference, the addition of Jerry DePizzo's saxophone. Songs like "City on Down," "Night Shift," and "Hey Girl" continue the O.A.R. tradition of upbeat good-time party music with DePizzo's sax adding depth and diversity, allowing the band to further develop its sound. There is also evidence that the band is evolving -- "When Can I Go Home," "So Moved On," ...

$10.79 Bear vs. Shark's debut is a cage match between volatility and anticipation. Visceral squalls of guitar swirl over triumphant drum fills in the sweltering heat of "Ma Jolie" and "Campfire," whipping the songs into an angular frenzy that suggests ...

$8.45 After Supertramp split in 1987, fans waited nearly ten years before most members of the best-known lineup reunited for an album (1997's Some Things Never Change) and tour. But while one of the group's two leaders was included in the proceedings (Rick Davies), the other one was not (Roger Hodgson). Regardless, the "new look" Supertramp soldiered on with a stage show that expectedly focused primarily on the classics -- as reflected on the 2006 release Live, 1997. Despite the long layoff between studio albums (and Hodgson's absence), Supertramp sound as bombastic and flawless as ever, as such longtime classic rock radio standards as "Goodbye Stranger" and "The Logical Song" sound very similar to the original studio versions. ~ Greg Prato

| | Gwen Stefani Sweet Escape CD (2006) Edited
Extended Versions album
$10.45 The sophomore solo effort from No Doubt frontwoman Gwen Stefani capitalizes on the qualities that made her debut, LOVE ANGEL MUSIC BABY, a success, namely the hip-hop-infused club sound she laid down on that album's smash single "Hollerback Girl." As on LAMB, SWEET ESCAPE boasts production work from the Neptunes, among other talented trackmasters (including Akron and No Doubt member Tony Kanal).
In general, Stefani backs off the new wave aesthetic she's usually associated with, although tunes like "Wonderful Life" and "Florescent" still burst with the quirky pop energy of the early 1980s. Instead, the majority of THE SWEET ESCAPE revels in the flashy glamour of the club vibe (as the cover photo of Stefani in sunglasses and platinum suggests), riding propulsive, rickety beats and singalong choruses, as on the hands-in-the-air title track or the Neptunes-helmed single "Wind It Up" (which features samples from THE SOUND OF MUSIC). The album missteps occasionally, but there is enough fun, fizzy dance-pop here to keep Stefani in the spotlight, and to satisfy her growing legion of fans.
Awkward and alluring in equal measures, Gwen Stefani's 2004 solo debut, Love.Angel.Music.Baby., did its job: it made Gwen a bigger star on her own than she was as the lead singer of No Doubt. With that established and her long-desired wish for a baby finally fulfilled, there was no rush for Gwen to get back to her regular gig, so she made another solo album, The Sweet Escape, which expanded ...
