While most historians like to keep guitar-driven rockabilly and rock & roll from the mid-1950s to early 1960s confined to its original spawning ground of the Southern U.S., the goal of becoming the next Elvis reached to several far-flung locales, one of them being the New England seacoast. When Freddy Cannon hit national paydirt with "Tallahassee Lassie," the scene suddenly had one of their own, a local hero and a rallying point for keeping hopes and dreams alive, much like Elvis in Memphis. In this three-volume set, we have the first real documentation of that scene during the early days of the big beat, and rock & roll with a crude edge doesn't come much finer than this. Gene Maltais was New England's true rockabilly wild man, and the nutzo energy he pours into his renditions of "Gang War" and "The Raging Sea" is amazing; other highlights include the Satellites ("Rockateen" and "Linda Jean"), the Buccaneers ("Bye Bye Baby") and the Dusters ("Rock at the Hop" and "She's Mine"), all artists on the Massachusetts-based Cupid label. With 18 tracks of raw, unvarnished rockin' aboard, this volume sets the tone for the entire series. ~ Cub Koda
Contains New England bands from the 1950s.

| | Sirens More Is More CD (2007)
Raging Teens Vol. 1 album
$11.99 Released in 2007 a good 30 to 35 years after glam's heyday, this slice of glam revivalism is just about as over-the-top as you'd expect from the back cover photo of a gold-suited band in various states of kinky dress. Not many tricks are missed in the music: the lead vocals (by Muffy Kroha) have a breathlessly preening, upper-register yelping quality, the backup singing often motors things along with chants, and the arrangements have a brash campy guitar pop attack. The utter lack of original material does make you feel as though you're buying a souvenir from a very accomplished glam tribute band. But while covering Sweet's "Fox on the Run," the Bay City Rollers' "Saturday Night," and (most of all) David Bowie's "Rock'n'Roll Suicide" is begging for unfavorable comparison with the originals, the Sirens do show some imagination in the rest of the songs they select for this CD. The Sweet songs "Hellraiser" and "Wig-Wam" might have seemed too obvious as choices from a British act, but, after all, these weren't ...

Fans hoping for a new set from the Big Apple electro-pop trio will initially be disappointed, but that feeling will fade once they slap this disc into their CD players. The set revolves around souped-up remodels of Party tracks, but also includes their much sought-after 2006 single "Boom Boom!! [Black Blonde Mix]," "Cannibal [Bite Me Mix]," a number from their eponymous debut EP, and a brand new song. Most of the remixes turn the originals inside out, and ...
